I found this interesting and it seems a pity the thread deviated so quickly.

I'm familiar with that area too, although I've not been in the last couple of years. It's the type of thing it would be possible to look at without really clocking the to/from: all the mind is registering is the distances and place names. Anyway, I've never noticed it. If it's not unique to that location, then it may be peculiar to some long-gone surveyor in that bit of Northumberland.

A (Cornish) hedge is hard up against the road so there’s no option to site the post so the finger points the right way.
The older I get the more I’m inclined to act my shoe size, not my age.

This Callington one is WAY out of date. The road number has changed to A390 due to Callington Bypass.

It wasn’t the style, Mick. I was referring to the finger post pointing the opposite way to the road with an arrow included to reduce confusion. :)
