Bristol cycle infrastructure - petition to council

Post by simonineaston »

There's a petition open at the moment to try to get the council to review Bristol's dreadful cycle infrastructure here.

You correctly identify how dreadful cycle infrastructure is in Bristol (just like it is everywhere else).

So why on earth support a petition that opposes the removal of that dreadfulness?

The removal of the cycle lane on Cheltenham Road, which happened as part of a recent upgrade to pavements and lights at the Cheltenham Rd/Ashley Rd junction, is a total red herring. I use that junction most days and hadn't even noticed its removal – that's how useful it was when it was there. It was about ten metres long, narrow, and actually caused left-hooks by encouraging people to take the left-turn lane even if they were going straight on (which is the most common direction at that junction). It's been replaced with a slightly wider pavement, which was desperately needed – yes, I use that junction on foot too – as there literally wasn't enough room on the pavement outside the Salvation Army shop for the people waiting to cross. It still isn't really wide enough but it's just about sufficient now.

Ideally I'd like to see that section reduced to one lane in each direction, with a much wider pavement on both sides and if there's to be a cycle lane, make it a proper one with some solid protection (and a way of going straight on at the lights). But that isn't on the cards for the next 20 years.

In the second paragraph, the petition suggests that the council's delivery plan "should state that existing cycle lanes must not be removed (as has recently occurred on Cheltenham Road and is threatened on Whiteladies Road), but that they are upgraded to current national standards and are made continuous, so that they are inclusive, accessible and safe for use by young people and adults."
