Post pandemic illnesses

Post by Mick F »

Not really for the Health section, but rather current affairs.

I hear on the news that some very young children are suffering from 'flu - and dangerous it is for them.
They haven't built up any natural immunity.

There are horrendous colds going about locally, and no doubt nationally. I'm suffering terribly with one and only just coming out of it. I thought Mrs Mick F had given it to me having been out in Gambia, but there are loads of folk with it now and it's nowt to do with Gambia!

So, for two years we've kept our distances socially, we had a lock-down, and very slowly people are getting back to a pre-pandemic lifestyle ........... and catching colds and 'flu ......... and goodness knows what else.

I suppose the writing was on the wall about this yonks ago.

How are you lot out there in CUK Forumland?
Well, I hope ................ and not as poorly as I've been.

Mick, we are fine, no colds flu or anything. We are new to the area we live in and dont yet know many people in the area. We dont go the pub unless its for an occasional meal. The thing about you and many of your pals is that you all go to the pub and socialise practically every day. Communication of disease will be much more frequent in your case.
My daughters generation in their 50s has suffered quite badly. Their kids bring disease home and the crush of life in frequent music gigs doesnt help. When they get ill it seems to often be pretty bad.

We have family Up North, and they are down with heavy colds. Children too.
Both our daughters - one a teacher, the other in accounts but often works from home. Their children are down with it, and so are they.
We have friends round here who are not necessarily pub-goers, who aren't well either.

It seems to be running rife now, whereas last autumn/winter is wasn't at all.

Just so. And it seems highly likely that one or more additional pandemics will occur before too long. We humans are still winging about the planet in droves and performing all sorts of antics that encourage the bugs to thrive, mutate then come to live in us.

Susceptibility to illnesses of every kind also seems to be increasing as modern folk follow habits that are self harming to one degree or another. Many are unfit, obese or emaciated and following diets with poor nutritional qualities. Various forms of self-abuse and self-indulgence are rife, from drugs (including too much grog) to festering in polluted cities whilst getting various angsts about the various abuses heaped on us by government, employers and other people in general.

Still, any fule no that this is what happens when a population of any biological being increases to unsustainable levels. Patches of rot appear here and there on the huge population blob, for all sorts of reasons. The rots spread. They become better at rotting.

Yes! We're all doomed!! :-)

We've both had Covid for the first time within the last 12 months. We've also had the common cold which in both cases was far worse than Covid, it really rocked us as if the cold virus/ germ was playing catch up.

My flu jab is booked for next week. Boots are doing free flu jabs for those over 50 plus loads of others and a decent booking system is in place for those interested.

Health around here appears at an all-time low, at the moment. People have started having terrible Covid symptoms again over the last few weeks, coughs are almost ubiquitous, it's not a good picture. It's becoming unusual to remain healthy over the last couple of years, with the exception of half a day in bed and a couple more recovering from Covid in 2021.

Excess deaths were so high through October into November it was of huge concern, although almost entirely unreported in the media. They've been high since Spring, fortunately over the last couple of weeks they've started falling. 7-8% above average would usually be very alarming, but after the ~15% week on week, it seems almost low.

Presumably it's low levels of immunity which are behind all this? Which in part, can be explained by the enforced confinement of most of the population to their houses in 2020 and 2021.

It seems there's a bad nose/throat thing going around our part of the country. I've not got it yet, but my best friend has been down with it for a fortnight, terrible congestion, and lots of sleepless nights.

I suppose two years avoiding possible virus contact has weakened our collective immune system. We're off to Spain for a month in January, thanks to my son who now works there, I'll be keeping a watch on hand washing/avoiding public transport/busy bars till then. All through the last two years, I've taken to drinking in the beer garden of our local, it seems outdoors the risk of catching anything is very much minimised. Roll on January!

I’ve just had a humdinger of a cold, my first for about 5 years. I caught it from my 5 month old grandson. Started off with a sore throat, then couldn’t stop sneezing, now just full of snot. No bike riding for over a week, but I might venture out for a short ride over the weekend. I’d quite forgotten how ill you can feel.

+1

Still rotten.
Tired, achey, I couldn't even contemplate a bike ride. It's as much as I can do to walk the dog.

Not been like this for YEARS.

MickF's experience seems to be quite common.
After deciding not to see my daughter on a recent visit due to my grandson having covid, I wonder if I'm going to catch a heavy cold or covid anyway.
Last night I sat across the table from a friend's daughter. She arrived the day before and said she's got a rotten cold.
Cold or covid, I don't want either as we are away for a week in Malta on Wednesday.
I don't see a way to protect yourself unless you live a very reclusive life.

I see my immune system as something which requires several things to make it work efficiently. Fresh air and exercise, sunshine on the skin, a variety of fresh foods, fun and laughter, good company, a minimum of toxins - including drugs and other pharmaceutical products and a regular update of what pathogens are circulating in others.

Isn't it in part a lack of exposure through 'lockdowns' which is causing the current pandemic of coughs and colds? There's also the matter of 'immune imprinting', perhaps something to consider when so many have been vaccinated so many times for Covid-19.

"Immune imprinting" was reported on by Australian scientists in 2021, despite this the Australian government recommends a second booster (third dose), and even a fifth dose for the severely immuno-compromised https://www.health.gov.au/our-work/covi ... nd-booster
The experts say that while immune imprinting and vaccine risks exist, they're less risky than a bad covid infection

An article from Adam Kleczkowski, Professor of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Strathclyde published last month https://theconversation.com/covid-flu-r ... ter-191822
The section at the end, "Protecting ourselves", includes proper nutrition and exercise

Pretty much, if wider ranging, the same as my self-health "programme".
Caring for my gf post-complex hip replacement has paused my cycle every day regime, but I can stick a bike on cheap turbo OUTDOORS.
Try to eat a balanced home-cooked diet. No alcohol. Control my prescribed drugs. We still avoid crowded indoor venues. And plenty of sleep!
Other than covid itself I cannot recall any cold/flu type illness keeping me off a bike for many years. But then I have had annual flu jab for some 12-15 years!
