Advice for E tricycle purchase.

Post by Adwb »

I am looking at a tricycle with either 250 watt mid or hub drive.
The retailer says the hub drive is better for hills as it is cadence controlled and the lack of strain on the chain drive.
I have a lot of 12 degree both short and long climbs in my area.
Both options have the Shimano 7 speed Gear hub and a fairly useless 6mph maximum thumb throttle .
Thoughts any one on this ?

Can't comment on the possible variations for a trike but consider that mountain bikes all have mid drive. I wonder if your dealer stocks both?

What type of trike, upright or recumbent ??
It does make a difference.

My understanding.
A hub motor doesn't put any strain on the gears/chain but it also doesn't get any of the advantages of the gears as a mid drive motor.
Therefore to get the same torque they tend to be heavier.
The increase in weight may make the whole trike slightly harder to shift around by hand.

As you're going for an internal hub geared trike, the best way to "save" the chain is to fit a chain case.
Doing that will keep all the road much off the chain and greatly increase it's life.

luck ....... :D
