Another vote for Woolly Boolies, which are my go to winter socks.
My warmest socks are Norwegian army socks, but I can only wear them with no shoes or with slippers because they're so thick! I'm thinking of getting a pair of waterproof walking boots a full size too big to wear with them.

My grandad rubbed mutton fat into his feet ,and then wore two pair wool socks.

I've just finished a 4 hour ride in a new pair of Heatholders socks after reading this thread
I'm as near to hypothermia as I care to be but from the ankles down I'm warm! Very unusual for me, a perennial frozen foot type
They are enormously thick though . My winter boots will happily accommodate seal skins with a thin liner but they were definitely cramped with these on
Overall I'm well chuffed for 8 quid but make sure your shoes are big
