AIUI 0.9 mm is the accepted minimum but 1.00 mm seems like a good rule of thumb.

Nowadays the braking surfaces are machined whereas previously the rim extrusions were used with only tidying of the joint if necessary. So rim walls used to be thicker and much more uniform than they are now, but the ends needed to be joined more accurately when the circle was formed (but they weren't always).
