Shimano Sora 3400 short cage rear derailleur capacity

Post by rjb »

This Sora 9 speed derailleur is listed as having a max sprocket size of 27.
I'm thinking about using it on a single speed set up with a 13/32 cassette.

Current Sora mechs will accommodate a 32 sprocket and look similar so will my Sora 3400 mech be suitable. Anyone pushed the limit with this mech. Total capacity will be within the overall limit as it's only 29 teeth.
At the last count:- Peugeot 531 pro, Dawes Discovery Tandem, Dawes Kingpin X3, Raleigh 20 stowaway, 1965 Moulton deluxe, Falcon K2 MTB dropped bar tourer, Rudge Bi frame folder, Longstaff trike conversion on a Giant XTC 840 :D

I guess you don't already own it to try out? If nobody has any direct experience, and you need to buy a new mech anyway, then the 105 10speed model (which I believe is still being manufactured) is listed as capable up to a 30T max sprocket. Then you're pushing it only any extra 2T.

I’m running my Sora medium cage on a 34 tooth cassette. No problems. :D

Is this the later Sora 3000 mech which according to the spec is up to 34 tooth sprockets or the previous generation Sora 3400 mech which is specced up to 27 tooth sprockets. :?

I’ve ‘pushed’ the capacity on Shimano a couple of times, and they have ‘stepped up’ to the mark admirably (sorry). Just about to offer up a Tourney T15 GS long cage to a Mega range (34 tooth) and see how it does.
