Crotched type rims

Post by JJF »

I've just been looking at the side wall of a Schwalbe Marathon tyre where it says "For crotched type rims only".
Never noticed it before. What is a crotched type rim please?

There's a ridge on the inside of the rim that helps to hold the tyre bead in place under high pressure.

Luck ......... :D

It's the same the whole world over
It's the poor what gets the blame
It's the rich what gets the pleasure
Isn't it a blooming shame?

Well I've also just bought a pair of 'Slug-Masters' (Marathon Plus) tyres and noticed the 'For Crotched Type Rims'. I've never heard of them either so punched it into Google/Safari and ended up here.

Four punctures over the last few weeks (roughly 600 Km) in admittedly slightly worn Marathon Supremes has got the better of me.

A SLOW roll to Spring eh?

Another term for 'Hook Bead Rims' I believe. (As the illustrations above)
Part of the rim is designed to hook the bead in .
I have a couple of Classic Bikes and they don't have hook bead rims so have to be a bit careful fitting tyres and what pressure I use.
Most of my tyres say 'Use on hook bead rims only'

Five for me in January (Only two for the whole of 2022) 3 thorns, a shard of glass and a mystery. Tyres were - Almotion (3) Supreme (1) standard pre Greenguard Marathon (1)
I've put it down as a run of bad luck, but if it continues at this rate I will have to start looking at alternatives.

I have the club record for punctures as in 6 in one day. It was on my return after some time away on old tyres (Michelin Zig Zag)
Also have the club record for most unusual puncture. Carrying Trike over my head over a narrow bridge, caught a back wheel in a hawthorn bush .
Now generally running Panaracer Pasela's ( on 27's) and Continental on 700's .
