Africa really isn't what a lot of ppl in the west think. No longer starving babies needing a few slebs to sing for them! No longer J'burg and the rest nowhere. Economically Nigeria is supposed to be the up and coming place but there's a lot of other countries. One country I learnt a lot about from a uni colleague from there is Botswana. Poor country back then 20 plus years ago but with ambition. Mining was a big industry and it was run by Western engineers trained in Western universities. Even local engineers had to be trained in Western universities. An English graduate in a mining related discipline could fly out to these resource rich African countries and get a good job, they were practically recruiting at the airport 30 plus years ago. Then they got strategic and started planning for localisation.

Botswana was well on its way back when i graduated. Most mining related engineering graduates were then locals educated in local universities. Initially with Western lecturers but increasingly with local professors. It's why uk mining degree courses have virtually died out. Happened in South America too.

Anyway my point being that Africa has a lot of talent and resources. If it doesn't become an economic powerhouse one day I'll be very surprised. Might not survive to see it.

Might be off topic but due to size and remoteness in Africa I think a lot of modern tech is more useful there. Solar power, drones, satellite communication, etc were all talked about being useful to African communities long before musky starlink, amazon drones and UK FiT payments for domestic Solar power.

Poverty levels in Nigeria are the highest in the world, and growing.

Yes, we're not the only country with increasing wealth gap across the country. I was talking about figures, admittedly I read about them a good few years back, that showed the Nigerian economy growing quickly and the forecasts were that it would eclipse south Africa as the top African country economically (sub-saharan I think that is). At the time it was linked to big Western companies looking at getting a foothold there and not the petrochemical companies at that.

Whether that holds since then as they've had issues since like the islamists.

One last point, India was eclipsed by Nigeria in that source but its 5th in world economic league Dec 22 by CEBR. So poverty doesn't prevent economy size out seems.

Nice! Shoot down urgent blood deliveries to hospitals. That's what they're used for according to video.

The problem with Africa is that- it's a continent with many countries, so stereotypes abound- it is hopelessly corrupt, from top to bottom. Think of Angola- small population, unlimited natural resources and yet 80% of it's people living in abject poverty. I quit my job because I was on a project there and couldn' t deal with seeing kids the same age as my daughter living on the streets of Luanda. I know all the other countries down there with oil. They are all equally horrendous. Seeing Africa broke me. I have no faith in humanity anymore.

I may be mistaken but I think many or most African countries have greater corruption in their politics than The UK.
This leads to the riches of the countries being held back from benefiting the poor.

Not around here they wouldn't be - there are no hospitals.

They also have a very progressive approach to single-use plastics. But at the end of the day, this:

(Similar applies to most South/Central american countries with significant oil/minerals. Sadly. )

A good watch, thanks. Great to see real-world engineering working so well for so many, so efficiently. I appreciated the hand bell along side so much technology in the dispatch area - it works well so why use anything else.

There are actually. A friend shot one down over his farm. He reckons not very good sport though, easier than driven pheasants.

So such a massive and diverse continent, but you declare it hopelessly corrupt from top to bottom - no indication that there might be different countries, each with many different cultures...
A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.
There are two kinds of people in this world: those can extrapolate from incomplete data.
