Spokes ?

Post by TimeTraveller »

Hi could any one give me a little guidance regard spokes for my wheel build.. My shimano dynamo is deceased :( so a new build is on the cards

I'm going to build a dynamo wheel using a son 28 disk version (o.l.d) ( not ordered yet)
Just working out the spoke lengths but still unsure on the gauge required.
The rim I have is being use and had 2mm spokes in it, I've looked at the data for the son 28 and the spoke holes are 2.8mm so will I need to order thicker spokes, I was going with 2mm ?

Any pointers would be good

Use regular butted stainless spokes and brass nipples.
(thats 14/16 gauge or roughly 2/1.8mm.....the hubs are always drilled oversize, no earthly reason to use any thicker spokes)

Is the rim ok?
If so, buy a new dynamo the same as the old one, and re-use the spokes.
Simple.

Been there, done it.

No Its a complete new build My shimnano UR700 died pretty disapointed about that !
So have decided to build a new wheel with better parts . son hub and ryde rim..

so not realy able to grft the old parts in and I would prefare to use new spokes on it..

I use these two websites to calculate spoke lengths
http://www.kstoerz.com/freespoke/
https://leonard.io/edd/
They tend to agree (plus or minus a millimetre) and so far, with many wheels built over the last 6-7 years, all is good.
There is also this one from SON which I did checkout for one particular build

Well ...........

My advice, and you need a good eye for measurements and you need to ignore what is on the web regarding your specific rim and specific hub.

1. Buy your rim.
2. Buy your hub.
3. Measure the rim and hub accurately.
4. Buy your spokes.

Measure the rim by using two cut-off spokes with the nipple tight, and slot them in opposite each other.
Measure the gap between them and add that to the lengths of the cut-off spokes. This will give you an accurate ERD. (effective rim diameter)

You can find out your spoke lengths by a variety of on-line calculators.
I like these:
https://bikeschool.com/resources/spoke-calculator
https://www.wheelpro.co.uk/spokecalc/

Done this many times on a variety of bikes, hubs, and rims. For me, and for other people.
Watch this YouTube movie to see how a wheel is laced. It works for 28h, 30h and for 36h.

A little off of topic and apologies for that. The experience of the OP reminds me why I prefer bottle dynamos. Yes, in many ways they’re more limited and less perfect than hub dynamos but, should there be a failure, replacement is very easy and replacement cost is relatively low … just an option and one that’s well proven. Of course, bottle dynamos are so cheap (bought secondhand) that someone could use one as a temporary solution - no rush needed - whilst a replacement hub dynamo wheel is built  .
Don’t fret, it’s OK to: ride a simple old bike; ride slowly, walk, rest and admire the view; ride off-road; ride in your raincoat; ride by yourself; ride in the dark; and ride one hundred yards or one hundred miles. Your bike and your choices to suit you.

Blimey I'm ridiculed enough for having a hub dynamo never mind a bottle dynamo with associated tractor tyres.

I did take a look at the other options like pedalcell.. looking at the cost I decided that I would stick to the hub dynamos, I ride a fiar bit off road and the hub dydnamo works a treat in weathers including muddy trails. I also own charge option I purchase when I got the shimano dynao, I have a forumslader unit I biult from a kit which works good for me as well as a good set of lights.
Looking at other option would also mean changing a few items with more expenses, thats why I have gone with the upgrade on the hub. Money well spent in my eyes.
I pretty ok a building my wheels and have plenty of spare no dynamo wheels to use till I complete the new wheel, just a little confused by all the spoke calculators returning variable results ? even used the sapim and son version both with very diffrent results.

This is what made me totally dismis the pedal cell as a replacement for a hub dynamo..

very poor QC

Here another spoke lenght calculator, I like it: https://radtechnik.2ix.de/spokomat.php
It is a program to install and old calculations can be stored to be reused if necessary.
For some rims the ERD is available from the seller, otherwise it has to be measured.

For me today's availability of spokes and these calculators make it a fairly straightforward affair to build a wheel. I found it much harder years ago.

Different by how much? There's often room for 1-2 mm either way.

Or use a third calculator and take the mean or (if there's a large difference for some reason) maybe the mode.
