Ebike recommendations

Post by Pateo63 »

I'm 60 next week, slightly over weight, have arthritic knees, other than that relatively fit! Use existing pedal assist bike on short rides of no more than about 5 miles round trip in roads. But trying to increase my ride mileage for leisurely rides for exercise mostly.
I have a budget of approximately £2000 to purchase an Ebike (mountain type bike) but looking for recommendations from people who have recently purchased Ebike.
Only experience of Ebike is through purchase of UK business Swytch that I purchased a conversion bike kit several years ago, which was good for last two years but now has developed a fault which is a common problem with swytch generation version 2 kit. So now it's time to upgrade to a full Ebike very soon!
Hope anyone has helpful information to help me come to a decision.

Hub drive or mid drive motor? Your budget is tight for the latter. The latter is allegedly better for steep hills. Is that important for you?

E MTBs carry a large price premium. If you are only cycling very low milages consider something like this...

Had mine similar for 3 years - faultless

Reuse, recycle, thus do your bit to save the planet.... Get stuff at auctions, Dump, Charity Shops, Facebook Marketplace, Ebay, Car Boots. Choose an Old House, and a Banger ..... And cycle as often as you can......

Thanks for your feedback!
My existing bike with swytch conversion wheel is similar tyre gauge, which I have schwalbe marathon plus fitted but I'm finding they slip and slide during my rides, especially in wet muddy conditions on the terrible pothole riddled Liverpool roads. So my thinking a broader chunky mountain bike type tyre would be helpful in such conditions!

Thanks for your feedback, never thought about mid drive. Probably would prefer if affordable as quite a few hilly areas here!

Front hub drives like a Swytch are more prone to slipping than rear wheel drives. With rear hub and mid-drives you only really need knobbly tyres if you are intending to do off-road trails.

At £2k you'd probably end up with a small battery and a modestly powered miid-drive - unless you are happy to look at used. The other question is whether you want a step-thru frame or not.

Whereabouts are you? Buying from a good local dealer is recommended.

Easy to swap tyres to Schwalbe Land Cruisers. Very cheap but really great. A continuous bead on tbe centre for low friction riding on tarmac and big knobbles on the sides to give you plenty of grip on mud, gravel etc off road.

You don't need a mountain bike to use mountain bike tyres. Most low end MTBs have some crappy front suspension fork which just adds unnecessary weight to the bike and for road riding an the occasional cycle track, aren't really needed.
Without my stoker, every trip would only be half a journey

Yes but a lot of the badly pothole riddled roads are like off road terrain!

Step thru preferred. I'm in Liverpool.

Thanks but still rather go for a mountain Ebike with usual wide chunky tyres!

Yeah, the only cure is get a new battery bracket, I've already been informed by swytch to purchase replacement, but it's not 💯 guaranteed cure! Other customers have said something about removing hall sensor from inside battery pack!
