What does not surprise me through this is how all the politicians who so quickly promised action then so quickly did nothing and so quickly forgot their promises.

They overpromised. That was clear from the very outset. Bellicose politicians were bellicose shocker.

Update in Private Eye 1589, p38.

No criminal prosecution. And the new legislation has been watered down.

I suspect that as P&O is a discrete corporate entity HMG wouldn't have been able to exclude its parent from the Free Port process without legislative change.

What was needed in the former case was personal liability for senior directors when it could be shown that it was a deliberate or reckless (or grossly negligent) breach of employment law & its processes, but no sign of that either.

Very confusing these names -- and who owns what -- I take it this is a different set of staff -- if so that carry on last year with the ferries 800 staff has obviously set a precedent.

"In March 2022, P&O Cruises suffered a public backlash following a mass firing of staff by P&O Ferries, another former subsidiary of P&O. They subsequently embarked on an advertising campaign in national newspapers and on social media to clarify their separate ownership."

Yes I read that -- hell slap it up them -- they'll suffer a bigger slap hopefully this time.

Different scenario this time. P&O are going into formal consultation regarding changes to ts & C's which, if agreement is not reached may result in redundancies and re-hire on new terms. They've filed their HR1, as they are required to.
