Sturmey Archer 4 lever on drop bars

Post by Barrowman »

Experimenting with a 4 speed Sturmey on one of my older mounts ( a road/path frame)
Struggling to get the gear lever in a suitable place to select all 4 gears .
Anyone out there running one that could give me a clue where it might work?
I had it just below the brake lever and slightly offset Looked fine but the lever wouldn't come far enough back to get it into the easiest gear, lever coming against the bend of the bars.

At the last count:- Peugeot 531 pro, Dawes Discovery Tandem, Dawes Kingpin X3, Raleigh 20 stowaway X2, 1965 Moulton deluxe, Falcon K2 MTB dropped bar tourer, Rudge Bi frame folder, Longstaff trike conversion on a Giant XTC 840 :D

Interesting, that's close to where I had mine (based on a memory of our old CTC Section leaders bike) but it was coming down almost parralell with the brake lever , if I have it like the photo the bars wouldn't foul it (I hope) so thanks for that, as ever, there's usually someone on here that has been there before !

Simon is that John Woodburn doing the end to end on a Moulton ?

It is John Woodburn, but as far as I know, the photo was taken during one of his Cardiff to London runs.

My first Moulton was a series 2 F which had been retro befitted with drops.

The Sturmey shifter was located as a bar end shifter and it worked really well for me.

Same here (although this is a 3 speed AM, in the paper-thin alloy shell, natch).

The problem comes with 4 speed triggers and flat bars. They have to go on a curve, or hanging off the end, because of the lever travel in 1/super low. Neither of these is possible with a flat bar. Drop bars - no probs.
