I did have a period some years ago using this but was unpersuaded of the efficacy - do you know something definitive?

After a diagnosis of arthritis I too used it for a couple of years back in my forties. I stopped taking it and didn’t notice any difference.

I began taking Glucosamine Sulfate twenty years ago on the advise of a pharmacist on local radio(Dennis the Chemist)when I was having trouble with my knees and hip.His advice was that if nothing improved in six weeks don't bother any further with it.
It worked and I continued taking it.
When I stopped work I stopped taking it three years ago I had a hip replacement which is fantastic! :D
But when I increased my mileage on the bike again after the Op my knees began to grumble so I began taking Glucosamine with Condriotin,Vorpal of this parish, pointed me to a study that showed the added Condriotin with Glucosamine was even better,so now no grumbly knees :D

In "The Times" on Tuesday there was a letter from a number of eminent clinicians about Vit D.
They recommend that Vitamin D supplementation is increased from the current recommended 10micrograms to 25micrograms.

They go on to state that vitamin D is important for the normal functioning of the immune system and is extremely safe and cheap.
I'm currently on the 10microgram dose.
There are various components of my diet which add to this.
Is there no limit to the amount of vitamin D that can be safely ingested?

As I've mentioned before the recommended intake is likely to increase, and the advice on supplementation is likely to extend year round. This is because of better knowledge about the effects of deficiency.

Vitamin D toxicity does occur and is well recognised. The effects are predominantly those of hypercalcaemia. Apart from one special situation it's very unlikely to happen until intake is way above the recommended levels.

PS: Campbell has a lot of followers. I once had a good look at one of his video stories and was concerned about his descriptions of what's known about diet.

Multivitamins

Post by ANTONISH »

I read an article in the "The Times" last Thursday which suggested that a daily multivitamin may be good for brain health and staving off Alzheimers .
I've have been of the impression that multivitamins were ineffective or even harmful.
Does anyone have an opinion on this?

It is an interesting study. From what I've seen the participants who appeared to benefit most were those already known to have cardiovascular disease. I'd say this study shows a positive signal of benefit in these individuals over the age of 65 yrs but this may not be replicated in the wider population and as usual more studies are needed. However over the counter multivitamins are cheap and safe (subject to not being on other medications) so it would be reasonable for an individual to take them if they so wished.
