The only unmentionable downside of doing this in the summer is the insect life...

If you come to Aberdeen, you could cycle up the Dee valley either on the Deeside Way (gravel) or quiet roads to Braemar, 201 bus return is feasible. The Moray coast is lovely, there is NCN route there Fraserburgh to Inverness, lots of scenery and history. You could cycle there from Aberdeen on Formartine & Buchan way (gravel, variable). Not the drama of the west coast, but less m**ges, and fine cliff/sea views. NCN1 takes you up E coast, a bit annoying to me cos it is often up and down on tiny bumpy roads.
It is difficult to hire anything but a mountain bike hereabouts.
