For a real budget front dynamo lamp only, a 12v Mr11 or Mr16 led works very well. The bulb contains all the rectification circuitry internally so will work from the dynamo AC output, so connect directly to dynamo, polarity unimportant. Beam shape and lack of standlight may be an issue for some.

The Supernova E3 standlight is also disappointing. Apparently it is to extend the life of the super-capacitor that stores the power. I have a small Frog flashing white light at the front and a Life-somethingorother flashing at the back. Both run off two CR2032 Li cells and last ages. I feel happier stopped in a vulnerable place with flash and steady (dim) standlight.
I am NOT a cyclist. I enjoy riding a bike for utility, commuting, fitness and touring on tout terrain Rohloff, Brompton ML3 (2004) and Wester Ross 354 plus a Burley Travoy trailer.
