New cycling kit ... or is it?

Post by Nicholas »

I recently treated myself to some new kit (bibs/jersey/hat) from a well-known retailer whose name rhymes with Jaffa.

When I inspected the kit, the bibs and hat showed evidence of being, well, already tried on by someone else. Think a couple of short & curlies in the bibs and a bit of dandruff & hair in the hat. I returned them the same day with a strongly-worded comment on the returns form.

I've not experienced this sort of service before in cycling, so I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has received previously returned goods sold as new.

You should focus on the glass being half full.

If you'd have bought the cycling kit from a less salubrious retailer than Jaffa, let's say 'Gone bust bicycle farts' then you may have discovered worse, a fresh skid mark, or even a colony of these:

Probably better off not being too squeamish, and accepting that a couple of stray pubes and some dandruff are not really life threatening.

Hope you find some suitably fresh & sanitary kit in the not too distant future, all the best!

I’ve only got one experience of trying on ladies clothing - but all retailers I’ve come across who allow ‘try on for size and return if necessary’ insist on bottom wear being tried on over clean underpants, even if the item will be worn next to the skin in use
eg underwear or swim suits. I’m surprised ‘Jaffa’ don’t have a similar condition. It's commonplace for warnings to be posted in online shops selling ladieswear that a hygiene check will be required before a refund is issued.
I would expect a quality brand to be more careful than most about cleanliness before restocking. I agree a complaint is in order.
But I assume you have never had to suffer the indignity of a staff member sniffing the crotch or underarms of items you’re trying to return in M+S, to check they’ve definitely not been worn!!

Or perhaps they're looking for export opportunities:

Well, it’s a genuine situation which occurs when some folk ‘borrow’ clothing to wear for a night out and then try to return ….. everyone comes under suspicion. And it’s not any different to the original problem.
But I think your ‘public mouse’ takes the biscuit!!
I’ll leave you to it….!

Gawd, that is pretty disgusting. Did this well-known retailer whose name rhymes with Jaffa ever reply to your strongly worded returns form?
I’m more surprised Jdsk made a connection with the Japanese vending machines story and then posted links to educate us

No, not a word, although the refund was processed quicker than I had expected, so that was something.
