Island Cycling

Post by marjoribanks@gmx.com »

In the map of routes there is no mention of the “Five Ferries” route around the Firth of Clyde. Great day out, clockwise or anti-clockwise. As long as the ferries are running!

I would be careful about scotland and ferries, prepare to get seriously let down
The ageing boats are developing more faults, which leads to delays and cancellations, an issue which has been compounded by delays and massive cost overruns in getting new ferries completed, in a process dogged by accusations of financial mismanagement and incompetence on the part of the Scotish government

On a more positive note don’t let @pebble put you off visiting. CalMac sail more than 100,000 crossings per year, the vast majority without problems or delay.
You won’t be let down quickly checking the status of your trip https://www.calmac.co.uk/service-status. No cancellations today and tides and winds causing disruption are outwith anyones control.

It is not quite correct to say no ferry cancellations or delays today.
The Oban/Craignure route has fendering problems at Craignure which are causing some problems for MV Isle of Mull.
Supposed to be fixed by Friday but we have heard that story before.
Being realistic we have been dogged by problems and cancellations all winter.

and on another positive note, the Glen Sannox has done its first day of sea trials, managed two miles down the river under its own steam and hasn't sunk

Great day out? Great 12-day camping holiday, you mean. There's far too much to see on the route, too many beaches, cafes, standing stones , geological features, woodland walks, lighthouses...what a shame to bat round it all in a day :D
