Burrows Windcheetah Group / Spares / Info?

Post by Stu_Pid »

Hi all,

I've recently purchased a Burrows Windcheetah, Yes I know it has it has compromises and issues and may not be the best recumbent. BUT, I have been dreaming of owning one of these for 30+ years! Ever since finding 'Richards' Ultimate Bicycle Book' and pouring over the pages as a teen (which led me to build a Kingcycle clone for an A-level project) I've wanted one!

So my ask with AVD dissolved and MIke no longer with us are there any owners groups, spares available or old resources for manuals and specs etc!

Any help is greatly appreciated.

There are a few owners here, but spares are always going to be a challenge.
A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.
There are two kinds of people in this world: those can extrapolate from incomplete data.

Thanks for the responses, most of the spares I'm hoping are general consumables I'm sure and other parts can be used for many (idlers etc) but If there's a community of enthusiasts or a resource of tech specs (whats the spec for the rear bearings etc?) I'm keen to here more.

I'm aware of the bhpc but only lurked there, I'll sign up and ask in the forums there too.

Thanks again and happy riding !

Would these be of use for the joystick steering?

@KM2:
Thank you for the eBay link to the UJs which appear to be made of steel. Apart from possible weight and corrosion issues, steel on steel might be a better wearing combination given good lubrication.

I have an ancient Windcheetah, too.

The steering Universal Joint seems to be made by Huco.

I'll measure my one after lunch to see which one.

Searching for "Delrin universal joint" or "acetal universal joint" gets similar items.

OK, measuring my existing steering universal joint (which is marked HUCO), I'm pretty sure this is the part:

https://www.huco.com/shop/couplings/pla ... 1=41&b2=41

Cost about £50 direct from Huco.

My steering joystick tube outside diameter measures as ~15.8mm which is probably 5/8" (15.875 mm). The overall length of the joint is 86mm, and the other measurements agree too. UPDATE: I think the joint internal diameters could actually be 16mm (metric) instead of the imperial dimension.

The grub screws go through the outer plastic, through the aluminium splined insert, and into the steering joystick and pivot. The splined insert appears to be bonded onto the joystick and pivot pin as well.

I assume you mean the hub outer shells with the spokes ?
Some vintage and veteran car owners use a none fading heat resistant clear lacquer. It also has anti aging or yellowing properties. Plus protects the alloy from horrid road salts during the winter months. Available in aerosol or brush on cans . Hope that helps .Regards Kevin D.TEK recumbents uk

Dear KM2,
Despite this post being slightly older, I wanted to ask, If the pannier carrier is an original one and still for sale.
If so, I would be interested.
Kind regards
