New Trike Update

Post by skeltrike »

I posted a few months ago pondering a new trike. wondering about gearing, assist and wheel size.

What I went for: Azub T-Tris rigid tadpole 26" rear 20" front wheels, Rolhoff 14 speed hub, Steps E6100 with 630Wh battery. 90mm drum brakes front coupled disc and parking brake rear.

It rides really well out on the road but in tight spaces the handling and turning circle is nowhere near as good as my Kett.

padded seat is really comfy compared to the old kett mesh seat.

in terms of range I have only ridden it in 'eco' mode on. have done a couple of 90-100km rides with 500-600m climbing (some of it 15-18%) and returned home with 50km in the battery. average speed has increased to 20km/h from a long-term average of 16kmh, so I think the advertised range of 'up to 200km' is probably right as long as it is pancake flat and slow. I think going for the bigger battery has paid off but when I do another long international tour i will probably consider a second battery

Gear change somewhere in the middle , between 6 and 7(?) is a bit clunky but otherwise it is smooth and means i can keep going up hills. on the flat i seem to be routinely riding gear 12 without much assist. in the hills i am still getting used to more gears and learning where to be but enjoying overtaking the two-wheel uprights in lycra!

its hard to know for sure but think the 26" rear is giving be more bangs for my buck. when i switch off assist my 'one-leg-drive' is much faster than the 20" kett.

hope this info is of help/interest.

Skel

BTW my Heinzmann powered Kett is going on Ebay soon to help pay for a clip-on to turn my wheelchair into a motor-trike, so beware on the pavements of York

Sounds great. Thanks for sharing.

Have you had a Rohloff hub before?

Very nice. There's lots of adjustment on an AZUB. I'm a bit surprised you didn't at least go with rear suspension. At higher speeds you get less thrown around with suspension.

I'm considering going eTrike but I have an idealogical preference for hub motors. My current thoughts are along the lines of converting a Scorpion trike.

7-8 will be the double shift in the hub.
Doubly important to ease off in that shift. IIRC it ensures that any “middle” gear is *top*, not neutral, for safety.
A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.
There are two kinds of people in this world: those can extrapolate from incomplete data.

I tried a couple with rear suspension didn't like the ride, higher speeds are not usually my problem and on descents i enjoy some proper leaning-in to bends (which is even more fun with one hand!) Going to Dalby Forest on the MTB trails for a day next week and may be regretting the suspension choice.

I'm firmly of the opinion of NO suspension.on a recumbent trike, on my old 'Rider' trike ,it would hop about too much, i like to know what the trike is doing, the Azub is sorted out right.
I took have a Tri-tris 26, none electric, with a dual rear hub. A 3×9 SA hub, powerfull 90 mm hub drums on the front, with a single to g out front, I might add another ring , its easy to convert to a e- trike, but as i can ride above 15 mph , i ont see the point.
A laid back, low down, layabout recumbent triker!

Yep, I'd stick with 'manual' if you don't need it.
