DuckDuckGo down?

Post by JerseyJoe »

DuckDuckGo down? It's not returning any results for me, is it a global outage? Have had to resort to using Google... Ouch!

How does this happen to a major search engine!?

I've been having the same problem this morning.

The server is up but the search functionality isn't working.

Yes, Bing is down and that's behind a lot of non-Google search.

Alternatives include www.mojeek.com which has its own index and anything from https://searx.space/ which aggregate and cache.

I understand that Tesco can go down, taxi booking websites can go down, but Bing?! How is that even possible! Surely they have an army of engineers on call 24/7 for potential outages?

Perhaps some memes have hijacked the API.

Use "bangs".

I cheat in that I don't find DuckDuckGo search results useful but don't like Google (though I've blocked most of their tracking). So my default search engine is set to DuckDuckGo but use "bangs" to switch to where I do wany to search eg to Google (or Google UK) or Wikipedia or YouTube - and t's easier as you don't bother having to switch to the site and then entering your search clue, just direct from teh address bar.

Prefix your DuckDuckGo with an exclamation mark then a code eg

!g <google search clue> eg !g cheap cinema tickets
or
!guk <google search clue> eg !guk cheap cinema tickets (to search using Google's UK search
or
!w <wikipedia search clue> eg !w Boyle's Law (for direct Wikipedia search)
or
!yt <youtube search clue> eg !yt Genesis videos

etc. There are thousands of them and you remember then few you'll use very quickly (as they are pretty obvious).

It's something I use all the time as it allows me to have DuckDuckGo as my default search engine but to direct any search I'm making direct to where I want searched.

Should be back up now.

I haven't seen an explanation yet.

It's back up but feeling very slow compared to normal. I reckon that was about an 8hr outage. Weird....
