When the Cycle magazine arrived, I read the new Cycling UK Strategy, and I felt disappointed. So, I thought about what I would put in it, and what a surprise when I settled on a very similar set of items. So maybe it is all in how you word it, I didn’t want to read 4 pages as the strategy, I needed if brief and precise. So here are my thoughts:

I feel that the primary purpose of Cycling UK should be to get as many people cycling as possible. I suggest the 3 themes to achieve this are:
1. Safety.
2. Public perception of cycling.
3. Accessibility to cycling infrastructure.

On safety I would put segregated cycling infrastructure, vision zero road deaths, road safety laws and penalties. We need our roads to not be used as race tracks.

Public perception is about how cyclists are portrayed in the media, and currently we are not in a good place. We need cycling to be presented as “cool” to encourage the next generation.

On accessibility I would put all the barriers to cycling. Gates, poor road surfaces, mud, parking, waiting ages for a green light, crossing roads. We need everyone to have easy access to good cycling infrastructure close to their homes.
