Bicycle service in NC500

Post by schneewehe »

Hi, does anyone know if there is something like a self service tool and pump station on the NC500 west and north coast route (from Malaig to JoG)? Or even a bicycle workshop? Kind regards Andrea

A quick search reveals a bike hire place in Ullapool https://www.ullapoolbikehire.co.uk/ and someone in Scourie https://m.facebook.com/groups/242593866 ... 995580215/.

Mallaig is not on the NC 500 and I can't say for self service places, but Google (and this forum) reveals a surprising number, Dingwall, Dornoch, Wick, Thurso and more.

As you enter Wick on the A99 you will come to a set of lights on the right is a garage opposite corner on the right is a Bike shop and following the road down to the town centre next door is a Cake shop. there used to be a door from the cake shop to the bike shop. I have made use of the cake shop at least twice, I think the last time I passed it it was closed, that would be about 2016/17 ish ( Driving, took Mrs FW on a trip up to JOG ) I've just checked on Google earth and it appears to be open (image date 2022 ).

Can vouch for the bike shop at Wick being open in 2023. We first visited it in 1983! When it sold everything (I think it was a haberdashery at one point) from old school yellow capes to women's hosiery

We spotted are bike repair station on a corner in Poolewe, tools and pump etc.

The bike shop in Thurso was the most unhelpful gentleman we have met.

The last time I toured Scotland, (25 years ago) nearly all of the youth hostels I visited had a little 'workshop' in the bike shed, there were spare parts, spanners, tubes, odd tyres etc. Probably all gone now!
