Little changes

Post by UpWrong »

I had a really enjoyable ride on the Nazca yesterday, and to think I came so close to selling it. Glad I didn't. It's a confidence thing which can grow with little changes. The seat plays a big part. The AZUB hard shell fits me so well. I can have it reclined enough not to slide forward whilst still being able to look around, balance ok and stop and start reliably. Maybe the 160mm cranks suit me better than the 150mm cranks I had previously. And the 28-42 super compact double provides easy, simple, reliable gear changes. It just seems to require less thinking about gears than with a triple. The rear suspension is wonderful and the long swing arm is probably activated by impacts on the (fixed) front fork too. The aerobars are comfortable and one handed steering is a doddle. It was quite breezy yesterday so I appreciated being more laid back than on my other bikes. It's a keeper :D .

I'm currently running the Paseo with a Bacchetta Giro aluminium 20" fork. Axle to Crown measurement is 325 mm which is long for a fixed fork. The original Saso/Meks suspension fork has an axle to crown of around 360 mm. The bike seems to handle ok with the lower front end and I can get my leg over  .

I've ordered a WG 406 steel fork to try, https://www.wgbikes.com/en/category/20in-344/

No idea what the ATC and trail measurement are but it might provide another option and it's not expensive, about the same price as a tyre.

The fork arrived promptly from Barcelona. The Axle to Crown distance is about 275 mm, and the fork has a low offset I think, maybe 25 mm but I need to measure again more carefully. If that's the case then the trail should increase even with the smaller A2C. I have been able to fit a mudguard and a 49-406 Maxxis DTH tyre. So it should lower the front of the Paseo slightly, whilst making it more stable with increased trail, and making it more comfortable over potholes.

It did however come with a painted V-brake boss which I assume was a mistake, a failure to cover one of the bosses in the paint shop. I'll try to remove the pain with a dremel abrasive rotory tool of some kind I guess. That might explain the give away price. It was below the threshold for paying customs charges.

Hmm, I put the new fork up against the old one and couldn't see much difference between the two. But I've fitted a mudguard and it takes the 49-406 tyre. It seems light for a steel fork and steel should dampen vibration better than aluminium so I might have a go at fitting it. Another option is to use a 70 mm drum brake wheel I have, but I'd need to fit a short pull brake lever to match.
