ouch, ouch, ouch! (Vaseline)

Post by simonineaston »

Have just returned from seeing the surgeon after my Dupuytren’s fasciectomy. “All good - yes, yes!” he said in the usual bluff & competent-sounding way that surgeons seem to have. Stitches gone and I must focus on wound care (pictures are available…). The nice physio recommended Vaseline and so I looked it up. Here’s what they say about using Vaseline on open wounds. I thought you, dear reader, as a cyclist and hence not altogether a complete stranger to wounds of one kind and another, might benefit from this advice. (Always consult your physician, natch!)

I use sudocrem as a general antiseptic for cuts grass etc. unfortunately it does dry out with age. Anyone found an additive for softening it in the tub.

As usual I’m ahead of my time😀
Last year I’d a couple of wounds on my lower leg, result of a step mishap, and they just didn’t seem to be healing. I began putting Vaseline on and within days they looked healthier and healing began. Subsequently I’ve been slathering the stuff on any imperfection I get with great results.Especially all those irritated little wounds from strimming have responded well.

Only time I ever had an issue, was on a 10-12pcm tour (Nb. Mild stuff, Italy, New Zealand, UK, France). "Germonlene" an antiseptic and anaesthetic cream was ideal, probably only mildly anaesthetic, but was of benefit (Nb. Vague memory of it being too painful to sit on the saddle for a while down in New Zealand, even a mild anaesthetic was beneficial)

Savlon (still made by ICI ?) has been around probably just as long as Vaseline.
My Grandma swore by it when I grazed my knees, as did my Mum and I used it successfully last week on a nasty wound on my thumb; now healed.

I don't think it's the same tube my Grandma used!

I used Vaseline back in the early noughties, but found that it went through the pad of my shorts and left bum-prints on chairs. I switched to Assos's bum cream when I bought my first pair of their shorts in 2006 and I've used it ever since. As I have stated elsewhere, it also diminishes the pain of wasp stings, whereof I have a lulu at present.

After joining a company as a techie I was developing a test procedure and getting results that were a bit iffy to say the least. So the tech director told me to go out at lunch to get the biggest tub of vaseline I could find. I did not get the strange looks I got when I told the first chemist that I'll need a lot more than that tub.

I did eventually find a really big tub in superdrugs and it worked wonders sealing the edges of the samples in the sample holder so air didn't leak out of the sides. I got very good results from then on.

Vaseline has a lot of uses, including in a test lab!

As to wound care, I like germalene but my local pharmacist told me that butilidine works a lot better at preventing infections. Also to help heal infected wounds. My infected finger wound just got worse using germalene but with butilidine it healed up very quickly. Definitely recommend it over anything else OTC.

My emboldening. Please can you confirm that spelling, or add a link to or photo of the product.

Or was it Brulidine? (Lloyds Antiseptic Cream)

Thanks

Billy Connolly says it's a great sex aid. You smear it on the door handles of the bedroom so the kids can't get in.

If its grubby or past it sells by date you could add the dregs to your chain wax to soften and lower the melting temperature in your crock pots.
