But please have a look at the many discussions of the CTC and Cycling UK.... how many of them are discussing what success would look like in the future? And how many of them are filled with nostalgia, resentment and perceived slights in the past?JohnW wrote: ↑1 Jun 2022, 10:08amThe past has it's lessons - we ignore those lessons at our peril.
One lesson is that the future will have it's needs.
If we only look to the future we have to re-invent the answers to the needs.
That in itself will create more needs - our answers may be wrong and thereby again create more needs.

I had it confirmed by cycling historican thatthirdcrank wrote: ↑1 Jun 2022, 7:37am"Is this right?"Regarding fashion, at one time the club dealt with mopeds in club magazine.
The comic - currently titled Cycling Weekly did run for a while as Cycling and Mopeds but I don't remember mopeds in the CTC mag
"Cycling Weekly certainly disd and changed its title to Cycling and Mopeds. I think BSA, Raleigh and Hercules advertised mopeds in the CTC Gazette in the 1950s"

Re: Membership rates
Rise to £55 for membership proposed, not that long ago it was £48, that seems quite a jump to me
Re: Membership rates
At a glance it would looks less than inflation over the same period.Traction_man wrote: ↑27 Jul 2024, 11:03pm Rise to £55 for membership proposed, not that long ago it was £48, that seems quite a jump to me
People will make their own minds up about whether than represents value for them, but I wish everything else in life had only gone up that much.

15% over three years? depends what you're comparing it with!PH wrote: ↑28 Jul 2024, 1:15amAt a glance it would looks less than inflation over the same period.Traction_man wrote: ↑27 Jul 2024, 11:03pm Rise to £55 for membership proposed, not that long ago it was £48, that seems quite a jump to me

Your link says frozen for 2021 so it became £48 at least four years not three. Something like 3% a year compound interest, if the increases had been in equal increments. This years proposal is 6%, which looks on the high side if viewed in isolation.Traction_man wrote: ↑28 Jul 2024, 10:58am15% over three years? depends what you're comparing it with!PH wrote: ↑28 Jul 2024, 1:15amAt a glance it would looks less than inflation over the same period.Traction_man wrote: ↑27 Jul 2024, 11:03pm Rise to £55 for membership proposed, not that long ago it was £48, that seems quite a jump to me

The Bank of England inflation calculator confirms what I thought last night - £48 in 2020 would be £59 today. Even if you take it from 2021 it's still £57.

Re: Membership rates
That's a good point, it's just the jump that makes it look high as an increase.
As you say, it's up to folks to make their choice.
I feel £50 is a bit of a psychological barrier for club membership fees, it's beginning to sound like a fair wodge of cash, set against everything else, my YHA annual membership is £20 for example (which also gets CyclingUK membership at half price...)
