2024 Paris Olympics - Spoilers

Post by TrevA »

A brilliant silver for Anna Henderson in the women’s time trial and oh, so close for Josh Tarling in the men’s time trial. He finished 4th by a few seconds after losing time to a front wheel puncture. I don’t think Josh would have beaten Remco, who won, but I think he would have got a medal without the puncture. Atrocious conditions for both the women’s and men’s events, with torrential rain and wet roads and multiple crashes.

Fantastic ride from Tom Pidcock to win the men’s Mountainbike race. Punctured half way through whilst leading, luckily not far from the pits. Lost 35 seconds and dropped to 8th, but made his way back up to the lead group and won with a daring overtake on the last lap. French were not happy as their guy was leading with half a lap to go.

Yes, great overtake. I don't follow this... was it always likely?

Tom was hot favourite and defending champion. The puncture complicated things and it took a long time to get back up to the front of the race. Lead was changing throughout the last lap between Tom and Koretsky, the French guy. There was a place on the track not far from the finish, where there were 2 lines you could take - Tom took the faster line to overtake and they almost collided, but Tom got past and opened up a big enough gap to win.

Watching the BMX - GB’s Beth Shreiver has massive thighs and can generate a lot of power to get to the front, great bike handling skills too. I think another medal on the way. She would make a good track sprinter.

I enjoyed watching that. It's very interesting how they get the driving wheel onto the surface.

A cyclist called Mark who's done pretty well in the sprint thing started off on BMXs.

Yep, and Shanaze Reade successfully crossed between both BMX and track - 3x World BMX Champion and several Team Sprint wins and World Championships paired with Victoria Pendleton.

Sir Chris Hoy started out in BMX as well.

Olympic road races this weekend, then the track cycling starts next week.

Remco takes the Road Race. Fantastic ride - won it on his own.

I remember Chris Hoy saying you could bet your house on Shanaze Reade winning BMX gold at the London games. She crashed out.
No wonder there's so many homeless people. :(

Surprising result in the women’s road race. Marianne Vos and Katya Blanka Vas in the lead, Lotte Kopecky and American Kristen Faulkner chasing, they catch the front two and Faulkner immediately attacks - the other 3 just look at each other and she’s away to a 30 second lead to take the win. Vos 2nd and Kopecky 3rd.

British girls were nearly always at the front of the race but didn’t quite have the legs when it mattered. Pfeifer Georgi was a creditable 5th though.
