Measuring lateral saddle nose deviation.

Post by Gearoidmuar »

Some time ago, on a tip from this forum, I realised that my one-sided saddle soreness could be fixed by rotating the saddle nose towards the sore side. It was perfect on my touring bike but not on another of my bikes. The bikes have the same saddles (b17) but have different top tube diameters. How could I match the deviation? Quite complicated.
I worked it out.
Lay a ruler on the top tube with an inch mark on the centre of the tube.
Look down at this with one eye making sure that top tube obliterates view of down tube to ensure your view is straight town. Use stud or some mark on the saddle to measure the lateral variation. In my case, exactly one inch.
Then repeat procedure on bike two to get one inch.
Cycle on bike two today. Perfect comfort.
One inch is quite a lot, but that's what I need.

A good tip.
That does seem a big deviation but as you say it works for you. The right saddle and its position is such a personal thing. It can change with time, illness and injuries too. Reading your experience may well be the light bulb moment for a rider with similar issues.
Would it be better placed in the health and fitness section?

I was in a major Supermarket 2 weeks ago.I bought a cover saddle for £3.00.Comfy.😊
At that price can't hurt to try.

How did you arrive at this one inch deviation/rotation? Was it trial and error or did you just decide on a standard for all your bikes?
Another method might involve hanging a plumb line from the center of the noose bolt of your B17 and measring from the string to the center of your top tube. Obviously, if you want to replicate this on other bikes, you need all your saddle4s to be the set distance you measured from the seat pin center to the nose.
I might well try this as it seems logic that you ease the pressure on the inside thigh, one side, evening up the contact pressure.

I lay a metre stick down the centre of the saddle and note where it intersects the bars. The length magnifies the deviation.

Well, theoretically. I have done that, but I usually just bash it sideways till it looks OK. It usually is.
Have we got time for another cuppa?

I found one once, and tried it for free.

Trial and error. It works for me!
