Sore Bum After Radiotherapy.

Post by mikeS »

A year ago I was diagnosed with Prostate cancer and after a biopsy was treated with External Beam Radiotherapy and hormones.
My current concern is saddle soreness after about 10 miles and I've not managed more than 35 miles/day this season.
I've tried all the usual remedies....double paddedshorts, various ointments, different saddles and the saddle in every conceivable position, but to no avail.
Could this discomfort be caused by the biopsy, where 20 or so needles are stuck in the relavent area, although it's not now tender to touch, or the radiation?.
Or just me getting old...69y?
Are there any fellow ca.prostate victims out there with a cure!
Hopefully,Mike.

Not got direct experience so I can't help with practical advice - but that shouldn't stop me from wishing you well and betting too that others will be along soon with some good ideas 👍

I've made some suggestions in that thread.

A chap with similar issues got in touch with me via a mutual friend a few years back as he'd heard a recumbent might help and I had one so could he have a go?
Of course he could have a go, and ultimately he ended up with an HP-Velotechnik Grasshopper which got him back on the road.

A relatively broad padded chair, reclined to let you take some of the weight on your back and where the extra support doesn't impede leg motion is one way to reduce overall pressure across everything where you're taking weight down there, so maybe give a recumbent a go.

70 these days is not really old.Your doing approx 35 miles a day. Most people struggle to do that in a month.SLOWLY increase your mileage.

My treatment was different (Prostectomy), but I remember the biopsies. After this amount of time I don’t think they are the problem.

One of my friends is a similar age to you and recently started to struggle (up til then he was a regular rider doing 60-70 + miles quite happily). He swapped his saddle for a very well used Brooks and is much more comfortable - I don’t know what alternative saddles you have tried, but if you haven’t already, you could try softening a Brooks.

Or perhaps offer someone with an old, well softened example a swap of a new(er) one?

Ladies and Gentlemen, please accept my gratitude for all your kind sentiments and advice.
Mr, or Ms Porpoise(!)......not sure what you mean by 'Chamois Butter'...is this a generic term or an actual product?
I've tried Assos,Velochampion,Proshield Plus,Calendula and Lignocaine, all applied to the skin with only slight improvement.
I'll write again....more to say re cancer diagnosis.
Cheers, Mike.

The biopsy was certainly the painful bit of my ERT and hormone treatment, but none caused the problems you describe. In my case the "beams" were aimed at my stomach not the more sensitive areas. No problem cycling throughout the 28 day radiotherapy programme.
OTOH, because I can no longer cycle more that 30 miles (COPD and 76), on the odd occasions when I do try more the saddle becomes pretty uncomfortable!
