Dog Attacks On Cyclists
Re: Dog Attacks On Cyclists
Thanks - I'll take that risk! I'm assuming it's cleared for use in UK, being supplied by a UK company? But I could be wrong. It's probably sole use is on foreign tours, especially (having read several reports of problems there) in Greece.
Re: Dog Attacks On Cyclists
According to Alfie Moore a retired policeman " It's a Fair Cop" (BBC radio 4 stand up comedy show where Alfie gives the audience a scenario and asks them to make the correct decision usually from a multiple choice of answers ) it's a very funny show but I do seem to remember even spraying hair spray at an attacker is illegal but only if you went out "tooled up".
If you were asked by police after a hair spray incident why you had hair spray in your bag -- don't say it was for your your protection cos you'd get lifted.
If you say it was for your hair you'd be OK they couldn't say a thing about it.
They'd be very suspicious if I was carrying hair spray as I'm completely bald

Re: Dog Attacks On Cyclists
Have you thought how you would use this in real life.
Most of my 'dog attacks'' are really harassments. Dog barking, chasing, etc. Would you spray all of these.
Working out when a dog is actually attacking you is not so easy.
Also are you sure you will use it when it comes to it. I used to be frightened of dogs and was lent a Dog Dazer. I was too scared to use it in case I enraged the dog.
Re: Dog Attacks On Cyclists
Of course... It would be as a last resort, but well aware it could be pretty desperate by then. So we'll do our best to avoid any confrontation - which would mean we'll retain the sprays for later use.
But at least we'll have something which would hopefully help if things go badly.

Re: Dog Attacks On Cyclists
It would have been interesting if you could have handed the Dog Dazer to someone like me, who is more comfortable around barking dogs. I'd have tried it for you and let you know about its efficacy or safety. Possibly via a message from A&E.simonhill wrote: ↑8 Oct 2024, 6:05pmHave you thought how you would use this in real life.

Re: Dog Attacks On Cyclists
A thought, too: does anyone know of blowing a very loud whistle might help deter a dog? I was thinking that in remote hills when walking (in the Balkans), if you can alert the dog owner to an issue, he can call his dogs off. But might the whistle blast cause a dog to back off?
Re: Dog Attacks On Cyclists
... or further enrage the dog(s)?
Re: Dog Attacks On Cyclists
I use a so-called "silent whistle" with my dog sometimes, and it does make her hesitate and think. I doubt it would provoke a dog, so I don't imagine there is a danger of making things worse.Rob D wrote: ↑8 Oct 2024, 6:34pm A thought, too: does anyone know of blowing a very loud whistle might help deter a dog? I'd just need to take my helmet off and the poor doog would be blinded by the reflection.pwa wrote: ↑8 Oct 2024, 6:37amPledge?Cowsham wrote: ↑8 Oct 2024, 1:47am According to Alfie Moore a retired policeman " It's a Fair Cop" (BBC radio 4 stand up comedy show where Alfie gives the audience a scenario and asks them to make the correct decision usually from a multiple choice of answers ) it's a very funny show but I do seem to remember even spraying hair spray at an attacker is illegal but only if you went out "tooled up".

Cunning. I feel we are making real positive steps in this dog management thread. In contrast to many threads, which just descend into daftness.Cowsham wrote: ↑9 Oct 2024, 12:29amI'd just need to take my helmet off and the poor doog would be blinded by the reflection.pwa wrote: ↑8 Oct 2024, 6:37amPledge?Cowsham wrote: ↑8 Oct 2024, 1:47am According to Alfie Moore a retired policeman " It's a Fair Cop" (BBC radio 4 stand up comedy show where Alfie gives the audience a scenario and asks them to make the correct decision usually from a multiple choice of answers ) it's a very funny show but I do seem to remember even spraying hair spray at an attacker is illegal but only if you went out "tooled up".

Yes and a pledged polished shaved head will be more aerodynamic so I'll be able to cycle faster away from the snarling enamel.

Excellent point: what you're going to in what situation is much better decided in advance, and then mentally rehearsed.simonhill wrote: ↑8 Oct 2024, 6:05pmHave you thought how you would use this in real life.

But the dog will be in your slipstream, so won't have to expel too much energy to keep up and
eventually catch you.
