Number of balls in Deore LX front hub HB-T670

Post by Rob D »

Sorry, I know this has popped up in forums (fora?) before, but I wonder if Shimano could've made a mistake? I can't access their specs.

Anyway, only days from departure, I realised my front wheel was just about due for a service. It's 2.5 years old, covered maybe 6 - 7000 km. I've pulled it apart, all looks fine, but there were 11 balls eack side, not the usual 10. This is it's first service. It was spinning beautifully.

I am going to replace the balls with G25s but having cleaned the old ones, which are fine, so too the cups and cones, I tried putting the 11 back in. They're pretty tight to each other.

My dilemma is, do I assume Shimano are infallible, or might they're have made a mistake? And if so, why did the wheel spin so well? I can't find anything on this aspect on the net.

I'd be really grateful if someone can advise soon, please, as we're going on a long training ride tomorrow.

Many thanks,

Rob

Just seen a spares diagram and that shows 11 balls.

You star! Thanks very much.

I've seen similar questions on the net, the consensus being that (all?) Shimano front hubs have 10. Someone suggested 11 and was shot down for it...

That's really helpful, thanks lots.
