New date May 2025 (anybody ready to start a "Europe 2025" thread? And it'll cost most of us €7

... which will require UK citizens (and those from other visa-exempt countries such as the US, Australia and Canada) to apply for a waiver before entering the bloc, was now likely to come into force by May 2025
Although "by May 2025" clearly includes any date between now and May 2025.

SNAP! I was just thinking it's bit early for next year's thread... : - )

And that article also has the (next) new start date for EES of 10 November 2024.

Maybe the May 2025 date comes from the 6 month transition during which you wont be refused entry at the border if you don't have an Etias (ie Nov 2024 + 6 months = May 2025).

But my impression is once you have an Etias it lasts 3 years (unless your passport expires sooner).

Sounds like EES is being delayed again. This is from BBC, but I've seen it elsewhere as well.

"The European Commission has admitted there could be a further delay to the introduction of new border checks due come in at the Port of Dover, Eurotunnel and Eurostar in November."

Presumably ETIAS can't come in till EES is bedded down.

I've seen the intended timing described as "a few months" apart.

Will all the new rules help the smaller airports, for us up north going to Manchester or London eats into you time abroad. Even the Euro trains are a hassle if not living in London. If your away with luggage and bike over the limit it's still cheaper than going south for a plane. We prefer going Glasgow to s European hub for long haul.flights

It will only affect the EU airports, not the UK ones. I imagine that flying into an airport which is less popular with foreign (third country) tourists will probably make it easier.

Dover and Eurostar are unique (I think) in doing passport controls before boarding. By their nature they will also have large volumes of Brits and other 3rd party nationals at any time.

Once you've done it the first time, it should make entry/exit easier and quicker (e-gates, etc). Although I think it only lasts 3 years (or is that only ETIAS - my brain hurts).

ETIAS: 3 years or until passport expires, whichever is sooner. As upthread.

EES: The digital ID part lasts 3 years, after which you have to reregister to set it up again.

All corrections welcome.

Just found out that Zeebrugger Hull ferry is no more, was an option if the weather turns. Now it's definitely Amsterdam ferry to Newcastle.
Was a good ferry when we used the Van , no south of England traffic chaos going to Dover. And for bike the Belgian cycle routes are good for going south into France.

It's Newcastle ferry as it's an easy ride from the ferry to Newcastle railway station and on to Glasgow.. Hull is a little further away from York station.

I know it probably means the mighty Transpennine Express but how far is Hull Paragon from the ferry terminal?
