Slightly broken Brompton – anyone want a project?!

Post by tricitybendix »

I have an aging Brompton (in British racing green) which I was hoping to bring back to life but I’ve just had a quote for £650 from the bike shop to do so, so I’ve given up on that plan! Main thing is it needs a new sprocket and as the hub is obsolete (Sachs SRAM) this can’t be sourced, so it needs a new hub built into a new wheel. Then a new chain, cables, brakes, levers and shifter, handlebars as the ones on it have a tendency to snap, pivot/hinge, mudguard stays.

Offers welcome from anyone who fancies a project! I can send pics if anyone’s interested. I’m based in Frome but could get it to Bath, Bristol or Paddington stations without too much trouble.

I’m afraid I can’t as it’s still at the bike shop! I will as soon as I’ve collected it (probably Friday).

I’m sure you’ll get some interest here. Some pictures of the bike are needed together with one of the quote for work needing to be done. If you have an expectation of selling price that would be good (to hear) too. People will really need an approximate age and model details too. Bromptons tend to hold their price well; however yours is old and it does need quite a bit doing to it, parts ain’t cheap and some might be hard to find, and only a limited number of people will have the skill base needed for the restoration work. Apparently some Brompton replacement parts are dealer fit only … that could be a bit of an issue.
Don’t fret, it’s OK to: ride a simple old bike; ride slowly, walk, rest and admire the view; ride off-road; ride in your raincoat; ride by yourself; ride in the dark; and ride one hundred yards or one hundred miles. Your bike and your choices to suit you.

Next you'll be telling us Bromptons have an OBD2 diagnostic port that can only be accessed by specialist repair centres

Reminds me of the old joke… no offence meant, I’m sure it’ll make a lovely ride - and who can resist BRG!?

Yes, seems weird doesn’t it. However some text that I’ve read says that there are some parts that the dealers are not allowed to sell as loose spares and that those parts are only available when fitted by a dealer. The comment said that that restriction only applied in the UK. Whether that passed on comment is true or not I wouldn’t like to say, my objective was to raise (echo) the possibility and after that: caveat emptor.

Yep weird -- a bit like Sony was ( from my previous life ) they were very lucky the playstation was a hit otherwise they'd be gone by now. A bit like Nokia -- ITT

Brompton have traditionally been sticky about jobs such as the rear-triangle hinge, work on the frame in general, and the seat-post sleeve. Although they have sometimes sold parts such as the sleeves, and the hinge bushes, they have not made the tools available to oiks such as you and me, and they have labelled things "only for fitting by a dealer". This seems to happen more in the UK than in some other countries - I'm not sure whether trading laws prevent it elsewhere, or there aren't enough dealers, or what.

However, some tools have become available from them this year. I'm not sure whether policies are changing? For example the seat reamer: https://www.brompton.com/p/986/seatpost-sleeve-tool-kit-no-glue although that's quite expensive so you'd have to be keen on home maintenance to justify one. The rear hinge kit is another example: https://www.brompton.com/p/985/rear-hinge-tool-kit I do have one of those, and have so far done the job twice - once for a friend, and earlier this year on my 2012 model.

Some of us just come from the tradition that "no-one (else) gets to touch my bike" (for maintenance), which clashes completely with the modern idea that you need a paid professional to do it properly.

That's me to a T --- had my fill of "paid professionals" --- if you need a job done properly do it yourself. This week I had to fix a comms fault in my van cos the repair centre main dealer for NI couldn't but charged me for trying anyway.

Personally, I'd get another quote ftom another bike shop. I'm pretty damn sure that sach sprockets were interchange with Sturmey Archer sprockets, snd I'm sure you can get steel handlebars which don't have a tenancy to snap... that leaves the joins to sort out and tge braking system, which may only need cables and new brake shoes, depending on the weight tge bike has to carry (rider+luggage).
Unlimited economic growth in a world of finite resources doesn't fit nor does it guarantee happiness.
