Garmin Edge 830 - no map in free-ride

Post by Tinkerbell »

I acquired a Garmin Edge 830 second hand and all seems to work fine. If I plot a route (through Komoot, or whatever) and load it up then the map appears as expected and I can follow it happily - even if I move through different screens and back.

If I want to just ride showing the map, but without a route (ie just free-riding or exploring), the map won’t show.

A friend with the 810 can keep his map available without a route, so is this a “feature” of later versions, or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks

You - or your Garmin - are doing something wrong, the map field should always be there whether you have a route loaded or not.

First two options:
1. A factory reset.
2. Plug it into your laptop and connect it to Garmin Express which is the updates site. Depending on how old it is and when it was last updated, it should sit there for anything up to about 3hrs downloading updates, firmware, mapping etc.

If neither of those work, it may be worth trying the Garmin forum or customer services.

Thanks Rareposter - I’ll try those out

It might be your friend has turned on a screen for the map, haven't got my Garmin to hand but think it's something like:

Settings/Display/Data screen/Number of fields/1/ then select map as that field. Don't turn on autoscroll as the screen constantly scrolls between active screens.

That’s it! It was set to “Display while navigating”

Thanks Redvee - simple when you know :-)

Would it be possible to change the thread title to add "[solved]" at the end, as happens on some other fora? This would be helpful to those searching later. Or does this introduce technical complications?
I am NOT a cyclist. I enjoy riding a bike for utility, commuting, fitness and touring on tout terrain Rohloff, Brompton M3 and Wester Ross 354 plus a Burley Travoy trailer.
