Warm showers

Post by Kevin67 »

Has anyone had and experience with this. Is there plenty of availability etc

I'm planning lejog next year using hotels ,b and bs and hostels. Just wondering if it is worth joining warm showers as another option of finding accommodation

Thanks

It seems to cost 30 USD to sign up to Warm Showers these days, so you might not get a return on that in terms of free accommodation, if you're just looking at it for one LEJOG trip. A bit of a gamble I suppose! It's several years since I was a member (both hosting and using).

Any WS hosts who live near the main LEJOG routes are likely to get a lot of requests, but that doesn't necessarily mean they always turn LEJOGers down.

There's been a lot of "controversy" around the new(ish) owners of this organisation. Some terrible stories, but some long-term hosts seem unaffected (or just blind to it). All a bit odd!

I signed up a few years ago, but gave up after a year, after noone ever replied to my requests. Since then I've spoken to quite a few happy users; they mostly say that you need to play the odds. Treat it as one option; on a long trip expect to use hostels/campsites/cheap airnbnbs most nights, hopefully get a few nights with WS.
In May I spoke to a Bristol cyclist who hosts a bit, and has also been a guest a lot. He reckoned you'd easily find a host on most nights in Bristol, but expect to make a lot of requests!

(I think the system may favour guests who have also hosted in recent times? Not sure how that works ... reviews? ... kudos? ... )
