The old bridge has the cycle path. The new bridge is motorway traffic only.

Is it possible to ride over from Bristol side and turn around and come back and if so how long would that take"?
It takes about 15-20 minutes to cross the bridge, it’s about 3 miles from Aust Services on the eastern side to Thornwell on the western side of the estuary.

We did it on our JOGLE in 2009. Worth it for the view from the middle.

And if I'm interpreting "turn around and come back" correctly, yes, very much so. There's a track on each side of the bridge but both are two-way (and wide enough for it). The north-side track is definitely better if you might go into Chepstow. Both offer good views.

It may or may not matter, but crossing the old Severn Bridge ensures that your LEJOG includes all the countries of the island of Britain. That may or may not be a box you want to tick.

The England / Wales border isn't actually on the suspension bridge itself. That is entirely in England. It is at the mid pint of the abutting bridge over the Wye.
