I meant to mention alternatives. Yes trains are plain daft in India, best avoided. Although we did once get a take on with us for a short ride but still buckets of paperwork.
Old style buses are a possibility if they have a big roof rack. Unfortunately most of these have been scrapped and modern buses don't have racks so these are out.
When I was there almost the only car was the Ambassador (one in the video). These often had roof racks for one bike and another in the boot. Quite cheap for longer distance. With the demise of the Ambassador, I also doubt this is possible anymore.
Alternative transport is something to keep an eye out for on any trip. You never know when you may need it.
You may also want to look into getting a local SIM for your phone if you hadn't already thought of it.

Re: coast to coast India
Interesting about the trains. I haven't been to India for more than 10 years, but I often used to use trains with my bike, usually to get out of whatever city I'd arrived in to somewhere more amenable for cycling. Yes, there was paperwork and I would have to turn up to the station early, but never anything which would have put me off using them. What was more of a problem was finding space on the train - a few times I've had to take a bus because the train was full. I guess times have changed...
