SMALL BIKE Urgent need for Bikeability lessons

Post by Philip Benstead »

Urgent need for Bikeability lessons
I wanted a bicycle for an exceedingly small child aged 12.

Height 30 inches approx.

I need a bike with 2 brakes and gears.

Can anybody suggest a make, second hand considered.

If you can find out the child’s bike inside leg, that would help, because having a think about it, it may be as short as 12” (30cm), and most “proper bikes”, even 14” wheel ones, don’t fit a beginner below about 40cm leg. The Frog 40 is their smallest, and that is for a 40cm leg beginner, and I’ve just checked the smallest bike in our “library”, a 14” wheel Giant ARX, and that again looks as if a beginner would need 40cm legs.

Cnocs and similar are single-speed, but while Bikeability has teaching content on gears you don't need gears to do Bikeability (just as well given some kids are likely to show up on BMXs).

Can you confirm 30 (three zero) inches?! Cos that is the height of an average 2-year old. And you're not going to get a bike with gears, to be honest that's barely beyond balance bike territory. 14", maybe 16" wheels at most.

(And yes, I get dwarfism, growth problems etc although the OP hasn't actually specified anything like that which is a shame cos it could have further consequences for reach, leg strength, finger strength for reaching/pulling brakes etc)

Something like Frog 40, Specialized JettSpeed...
There'll be Islabikes available secondhand if you scour the likes of eBay.

Windsor Cycling Hub are doing a charity auction soon. They may have something cheap and mechanically sound.
