The flooding at certain locations up the South Wales (former) coal mining valleys came as a bit of a surprise to me, because we are just a bit to the south and seemed to miss the heavy rain. But speaking to a friend from up one of the valleys yesterday, they have had a lot of rain over the weekend.

The flooded streets of Pontypridd shown on the telly are mostly the ones that always flood when the river spills over. But there have been less publicised little floods in lots of places, and a few landslides.

It can't have helped that the relatively late autumnal leaf fall has left a lot of material to wash into drains and block them.

The river Taff has always been a beast, its channelled through Pontypridd in a deep concrete lined gully. Unsurprising that it can flood occasionally. Was always a risk when I lived up there.

How can our weather forecast apps all be so wrong every day? Several of them said 20% chance of rain today.

Well I can tell you it's not only raining but it's like a very cold monsoon outside -- I'm just in -- soaked through to the skin and needed a shower more to get some heat back in my body.

I can't remember a day it didn't rain this year.

I have just had my phone giving me an extreme weather warning. We are close to the South Wales coast, in the Red warning zone for high wind. Gusts of up to 90mph are expected. We have had that before. I will be checking for missing or damaged roof tiles in the morning. We also tend to lose electricity in bad storms. But we can still cook with gas and get warmth from the log burner. Torches are charged and candles are ready. Here goes....

Mrs Rjb had that warning on her mobile. Jumped out of her skin. Hers was the only one that had it. How do people without mobiles cope. :?:
Do you need an app to receive these. ??

That's a surprise. I've got an old mobile which I've removed the SIM card from and use it as a tablet. This received the emergency alert but a couple of hours later than swmbo's newer phone. How is it being sent to phones without SIM cards. ???

Power knocked out last night -- still none this morning -- some damage outside too trees down -- even the heavy stuff that wasn't tied down has been thrown around.

Sorry to hear that, but the storm seems to have petered out before it reached Sooth Ershur. Seems like you took the brunt of it. I was battening down the hatches but it didn't really happen. Torn between being disappointed and relieved.

Cheer up, though - some decent days ahead, cold but calm and dry.

Thanks -- had to fix the wee generator ( couple of corroded wires at the breaker) but have it working now with central heating, fridge, freezer and some sockets on.

Dangerous to even walk around outside -- I struggled to walk forward through the wind feeling my feet lift a few times.

Your phone still communicates with a tower without a sim checking in to see where it is.
If you have a sim then that’s like a pass to then carry on further communication.

Thanks for that explanation paulatic. It's good to know those masts are keeping an eye on me.
