Bikes on Buses in New Zealand - Not Anymore

Post by simonhill »

Interesting and amusing article here.

For may years lots of Kiwi buses had bike racks on the front, something we would love. Now some bright spark has realised these may interfere with the bus' headlights so cannot be used.

In a separate development, at the same time Auckland are thinking of allowing bikes inside buses. Something we would like.

The photo of Greater Ōtautahi might imply that a cargo bike, with bulky cargo box, could previously be taken on a bus in NZ. This somehow seems unlikely; even if it fits, I can't imagine many people lifting it on to the rack.

We were cycling around Waiheke in 2018 and had to get back fast to catch a ferry, so stopped a bus. The women driver hesitated and said: "I am running late and I can't be bothered with that."

So I am not sure loss of the service is going to amount to much.

I'm not sure about that.

Imagine that a bus company here decided to mount a rigid metal frame in front of their vehicles for some purpose other than to carry bikes. I'm sure cyclists would be the first to complain on safety grounds - remember the fad for mounting bull-bars on the front of cars.

A bike rack could be have a flat front which wouldn't pose a significantly higher risk than the front of a bus already does. It doesn't have to have protruding bars.

... but they don't.
To remind you, this is from the article that the OP posted:

If it wasn't for the fact that it is a bike rack would you be happy to see that attached to the front of buses?

And even if it had a mattress attached to the front of it then the complaints would move on to obstructing the drivers visibility.
