What do you do with the box at the other end? Assuming you're touring.

I've always done a circular route in the past, so i was thinking of leaving the box and packaging at my first nights accommodation or campsite (presuming they would allow it )

Just getting things together for my trip to India next week. I am using a cardboard bike box and as it is going to be wet in UK I am wrapping it in cling film. I hate the stuff and do not usually use it, so had to buy some from Tescos, £1.80 for a PVC free roll 40m x 35cm.
I think that long haul flights generally put luggage in containers - particularly when it is moved between sectors - but luggage does go on open trailers on short haul.

I have flown a few times now with my Airnimal Joey packed in the Airnimal Travel Case. It has been an excellent experience each time. I have never had to worry about storing the Travel Case when I arrived because I used the same hotel as my base. Last year I went to the York Festival and flew to Leeds Bradford Airport then took the bus (and my Travel Case) into Leeds where I caught a train to York. It was all pretty simple. Getting back to LBA was even simpler as I got a lift.

This year however when I go the the Festival again, I want to do a multi-day ride from LBA to York. To do that, I'll have to arrange to leave the Travel Case in Leeds where there are a few Left Luggage facilities and then set out from there. I am not expecting any sort of complications but if I do, say all the Left Luggage places in York close down, I'll find another solution. Perhaps I could change my plans a bit and go directly to York by train just as I did and do a number of day rides from York. But whatever, having the Travel Case makes getting places a great deal easier. Incidently, having the Travel Case meant I didn't need a bike reservation on the train.

There's a left luggage disruptor called Bounce. Haven't used them but they've got a huge number of locations and could be handy if you can't get accommodation to take a box or soft bag.

So...I'm planning a one-way tour and will be flying home from Barcelona. My accommodation is about 15miles from the airport - anyone know of any soft, packable bags? I thinking of posting the bag to my final accommodation, then carrying the bag on the bike, then packing the bike at the airport.

Any advice?

I've got a Ground Effect Bodybag, (now called Dogsbody).

It's a NZ company and I ordered from them - plus Vat.

They're not cheap but I've used it 10 times or so for EU and once from Japan. It means I can take loaded bike on train or ride and this has saved costly transport. More than paid for itself.

You might find cheaper look-alikes.

For linear tours I have used a box on the outward flight and picked up another at the end point for the return. Then used it for the next outward journey. But I do have, and can recommend, the Lifeline bag, link below, if you are doing a circular route or can get the folded up bag (about 130x30x20cm) couriered to your destination. Very strong padded bag, with roller wheels on one corner and a shoulder strap, though I add taped on thick cardboard to anything pointy that might rub against the bag. Complied with Eurostar's requirements for taking dismantled bikes and most TGV/ICE/Renfe trains.
