Drop bar Tern Joe?

Post by foxyrider »

I was recently gifted a virtually unused 2019 Tern Joe27, which, if you don't recognise the name is effectively a Dahon Jack updated with hydraulic disks, 27.5 wheels and Acera 3x9 gears.

I've had a couple of rides during the 'twixtmas' season, it rides very well for a folder but my thoughts have already turned to how i can 'improve' it to a touring bike with drop bars, retaining the gearing & brake set up along with the full folding option. I'm already thinking of changing the wheels to 700's purely on tyre/tube availability, rear rack and guards are simple enough, even the handlebars are quite straightforward. Where i'm potentially looking at difficulty is the gear/brake units.

So can anyone suggest a way to run hydro drop levers with a 3x9 (or 10/11) set up?

thoughts?
Convention? what's that then?

Mechanical brifters and a Giant Conduct Hydraulic Disc Brake Upgrade Kit and a compatible Giant stem.

No personal experience.

The Tern has a dedicated stem system and i'd rather keep things simple but its a set up i was unaware of before

You may be able to find some mechanical shifters with hydraulic brakes. The main problem is they

You may be able to find some mechanical drop shifters with hydraulic brakes. The main problem is they may come with flat mount callipers & the bike looks like it has post mount fittings. The 2 solutions I can think of for that are:-

1) you can get adapters but they need 10mm bigger rotors (ie if you have 160mm rotors you will need to swap them for 180mm ones).

2) Hope do callipers for drop bar brakes, the RX4+ (Both flat mount & post mount, and in both DOT & mineral oil versions. Ooh, and pretty colours! :D ). They aren't cheap, but aren't ludicrously expensive either, at around £100 each. But they are fully serviceable, & likely to remain so for a considerable period.

I think i've got a solution, i'll update as and when i set it up. For now, a set of mudguards has improved things no end!

On my commute bike I'm running road hydro STIs with MTB hydro callipers, there are some that say it loses a little sharpenss but I've not noticed any. I could have gone 10sp with post mount road callipers but 11sp came with flat mount only, adapters at the time weren't readily available and the only place I saw them was from Canada and would have cost just as much as a pair of MTB callipers.
