Specialized S works failure.

Post by rjb »

Well I've never seen this mode of failure before. What initiated it. Lucky to get away with road rash.

Link looks private, or is it because I don't have a facebook account?

It's a private group, you'd have to join the group to see it.

OP: get a screenshot and upload that.

Looks like the through axle failed.

It's a rim brake frame, therefore QR.
That's just a simple failure to check the QR is tight. Nothing to do with Specialized or a frame failure.

It's up on road.cc now as well.

i can't work out quite how the wheel ejected in that fashion, snapping the chain in the process. IME the wheel pulls forward and locks into the rear triangle if the Q/R @wheelnuts are insufficiently tight.
Convention? what's that then?

If the QR broke while riding and one side of the axle dislodged from the dropout, the tyre would jam against the frame. Because the cyclist is moving forward, the jammed wheel would eject backwards and upwards, spreading the dropouts apart.

You should be a detective. :)

No lawyers lips on rear dropouts, presumably because the rear wheel separating like this is always better than it doing so at the front - but at fast speeds, who knows. Either way your flesh is scraping the tarmac and it's going to hurt at the very least.

Not conversant with Specialised S Works but does it have vertical dropouts?
That would mean a quick release wasn't done up the wheel would nominally stay where it should be ,helped by the riders Weight. Rider ups the ante on the pedalling front (or hits a bump) and weight goes off the wheel allowing it to drop and 'escape' .

I see written above the picture, it says 'S-Works Ali Express' , does this mean it's actually a copy of a Specialised S-Works ?
Edit video added :-
Here's a 5 minutes long video of a 'cloned' S-Works on youtube showing differences from the genuine article, I don't know if it's from Ali Express.

You'd have to ask the owner. But you can certainly buy genuine items on Ali Express. Whether it's genuine or not, by far the most likely cause of this failure is, as already pointed out, not closing the QR.
