Marin Rock Springs 1999(?)

Post by Tastheone* »

Newbie here looking for a bit of advice please.
A few years ago my husband bought me a 2nd hand Marin Rock Springs bike to encourage me to get out and about in the countryside and hills of North Scotland  it never happened and the bike has just sat in the garage, so can any of you enthusiasts tell me a rough value of it?
It's in excellent condition, the lady who owned it before me bought it new and treasured it, she gave me the original receipt, service instructions, owner manual and another bit of paper on V Type Canti brake and levers.
It was serviced and given a thorough check over approx 2 years at a local specialist place, no repairs were needed and no new parts were suggested.
Anyway I'd really like to sell it and spend the money on things I actually enjoy like wine and chocolate

Welcome to the forum.

Stick it on your auction site of choice, it will find its price in the open market or research the bike further, look for a specialist site to list it on with a full spec sheet and good pics.

Offering delivery will get you a wider audience.

Or ride it and discover its more fun than wine and chocolate  .

Hi and thanks for replying.

There doesn't seem to be many around to try and get an idea of the sale value unfortunately.

In my search I stumbled across this forum and thought someone on here might know.

I could deliver within reason I suppose as I'm based in the North East now rather than North Scotland.

I haven't ridden a bike since I was a very small child, I never wanted a bike as an adult either so it's very unlikely I'm going to start now I'm in my 50s

I,ve owned a Marin Rift Zone since 2006....ok not the same bike at all but has prooved to be an unbreakable machine , merely confirming the build quality of these American built bikes so buy this bike and you,ll have it for life !

MTBs of this sort of date go for £100 to £200 at our local bike charity, with a full service and a safety warranty. Most are close to £100, and aren’t “fancy” ones, simply basic bikes, and the few that are fancier, like this one, tend to be at the higher end of tgat band, but then take longer to sell.

Fifty is not too old to learn, BTW. Not at all.

Sadly, as Nearholmer says above, it's an old bike - even if it is in good condition - and as such I think you'd be lucky to get more than £150 for it on ebay or FB Marketplace. Depends how much hassle you want to put up with via an online marketplace. Maybe you have a friendly local bike person more interested in things like that who can sell it on your behalf? I've done that for a couple of friends who either don't do online stuff or who don't have a clue about bikes and simply want rid of something their kid used years ago...

Can you post a pic of it?

Being full suspension your bike is very dated for its specific niche type, and unfortunately doesn't age well or hold its value in that regard. I think that you'll struggle to get £100 for it and £50 is more realistic.

That's not a mark against the bike or the quality, just the market relevance.

You could try posting photos and information on Retrobike forum. This is kind of that niche market and you may find somebody who can advise you on a realistic price or want to buy it.

If it was me I'd stick it on Facebook market place for £100 tops and expect to reduce before it sold. I would not relish the task of selling this on somebody else's behalf and wouldn't ask somebody else to do it.

The model name has been used by Marin since the late 90s, attached to both hardtail and full suspension examples - pictures would help. Yours might well be an early one if it came with rim brakes, although having looked at a few pics of 1999 Rock Springs, they've all had discs front and rear.

Thanks for all your suggestions, I really appreciate it as I didn't have a clue about the going price. I'll see if the folk on retro bikes are interested, if not I'll pop it on the auction site, thanks again, pic added for those who asked, cheers everyone

It's a little more modern than I expected, the brakes are a very old model of Hope hydraulic disc brakes which were very good for their time. It is still quite a niche type of bike for that age so it might be hard to sell for a good price.

There used to be quite a market for retro mountainbikes of this type, primarily in the UK centered around the aforementioned Retrobike website and forum. However in the last ten years or so it seems to have been largely deserted. Hopefully you'll be able to sell it and the new owner will be able to appreciate the bike for what it is.

Nowadays many new bottom of the barrel trash bikes are based on these very old designs of full suspension bikes that were cutting edge back in the day. £150 to £200 will get you one of these new bikes that look superficially similar to yours, but are of absolutely terrible quality. If someone buys your bike who might have otherwise bought one of those then they'll have a very old but very nice bike instead of a terrible heavy chunk of modern rubbish, so it could be a win win!

Thanks for your info, it's a nice looking bike and in very good condition, just not my thing (cycling that is 😂)

I've asked about it on retro bikes and also popped it on the auction site so I'm hoping someone appreciates it.
