How to do it on a trike
How to do it on a trike
If I wanted to do the route on my ICE VTX recumbent trike , how would I go about it?
My trike does not go on a train or in the boot of a car as does not fold. I could hire a vehicle such as a van and drive it down to Lands End from Edinburgh, but at the end of the journey , the vehicle would be at LAnds End while I would be at John O'Groats.
Would I be able to return the vehicle at Lands End to the hiring firm and hire another to take me home at John O'Groats?

Re: How to do it on a trike
Many (most) van hire companies have options for a one way hire. Take one from home to a hire site near LE and another from a hire site near JoG to home. I have done that with Europcar to get from the SW of the country to Dover.

Re: How to do it on a trike
I've done it twice now on my bent trike.
But I had time to cycle the full distance Home -> LE -> JoG -> Home, so no other transport was needed.
Luck .......

Just out of interest: what is your plan on trips like this if you have ride-ending accident/mechanical?

Mechanical is the same as any other bike really - nothing particularly special about the VTX.
I'd take the seat off and pop it on the roof of a car to transport to/from the end points...
Of course you could just do a 1700+ mile loop: Home to LE to Jog to Home

A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.

Ice trikes is second to non if you need parts for a quick fix while on tour.
A quick phone call from a hotel/bb/campsite, has the need parts to you in a couple of days.
I've had to do that a couple of times.
A standard bike shop will easily do for non specialize parts.

Belong to ETA insurance. They will take you back to your vehicle, a train station, bicycle shop or home.mattheus wrote: 28 Jan 2025, 12:09pm Just out of interest: what is your plan on trips like this if you have ride-ending accident/mechanical?

Train station does not apply for a trike though.
Wouldn't call them unless no other option as would lose my no claims.

That is good to know as generally have to wait upto 3 months for accessories ordered form a local ICE dealer.Tigerbiten wrote: 28 Jan 2025, 3:19pm Ice trikes is second to non if you need parts for a quick fix while on tour.

Curious how this works. Is there a ETA recovery vehicle that picks you up? Or do they just pay for a local taxi/van firm?jrs665 wrote: 29 Jan 2025, 8:05pmBelong to ETA insurance. Admittedly some years ago, a member had her gears go in the rear spokes (day ride out from Oxford). She called ETA and they sent a full sized winch a car on the back type rescue truck. Strapped the bike to the rear of the cab.

They send a vehicle, or you can get it picked up and they refund the cost.deeferdonk wrote: 30 Jan 2025, 9:18amCurious how this works. Is there a ETA recovery vehicle that picks you up?
