New improved kettle from S2S

Post by foxyrider »

I know its not everyone's cup of tea (excuse the pun) but since 2017 i've been using a Sea to Summit Xpot folding kettle/pot. It's not perfect but apart from the warping lid (seems everyone has the same issue there) it has done the job brilliantly,

Seems they've taken the issues on board as i discovered in an outdoor shop in Germany last week they have an updated version called Frontier. It still folds but has less 'folds' so its easier to clean and a new Al lid which sorts out the main problem with the original. Well i had to get myself one, the folks at Ultralight Outdoor had one which i got for a tenner less than the German price. :D It won't get used in anger until the spring but i like to have my kit sorted well ahead of when i need it.

As you can see there are some other changes, new handle design, redesigned spout, less bright colour but it folds to the same size and will take 1.1l of liquid. For weight weenies they claim 201g, i weighed my example at 207g
Convention? what's that then?

Looks good.
However, we had some folding mugs (different brand) which split on tthe folds after not too much use. Has anyone with more folding wear experience found splitting on the folds to be an issue?

What about a rigid all aluminium version to nest in Trangia 25 or 27 pans: either as an extra or in lieu of inner pan as can be both pot and kettle?

EDIT pair corrected to version.

This is an interesting looking device, especially for those "I only need hot water" catering plans for overnighters.
The obvious plus compared to my old Trangia kettle is it's collapsible, but there again the Trangia kettle's interior neatly holds a 100g gas can, a couple of lighters, folding knife and a coffee filter cone, so I do wonder if I'm actually going to gain much folding up the kettle?

Pete.

I have a StS folding bowl. Actually two (of different sizes). Neither is showing signs of wear as yet, but you do have to be careful to clean in the folds.

Assuming the kettle has similar construction – silicone with a glass-fibre reinforced base – I can't quite understand how it works. Two problems, or questions: How does the base not melt? And surely it's really inefficient at conducting heat?

The base is aluminium, as long as you keep any flame underneath its fine. As regards efficiency, the original Xpot is a bit slower than my Edelrid Al kettle but not by much which is a surprise as the Al kettle is a lot smaller, the new Frontier should in theory be better as the lid is a better fit,

I've used several brands of silicon folding tableware over the last 10 years or so, never had an issue with fold failure but the constant issue has always been getting them properly clean. The new Kettle has fewer actual folds so should be easier to keep clean.

As for 'saving' space, despite being bigger in use, i can get just as much stuff in/around the folding kettle as my rigid ones, all my cook gear except gas is kept in a small packing 'cube'. I can get my Xmug in with the kettle now which i couldn't with the fixed kettles.
Convention? what's that then?

Thanks. I hadn't realized the base was aluminium.

Well the kettle would look similar but be aluminium (and not fold), ie inspired by s2s kettle....
(another advantage is the wide lid allows a mug to be stored in the kettle)

I store a mug and dish inside the S2S - folding of course.
