Well, if you are going to be pedantic it what was a humorous thread, then at least get it right. The CNCs choice doesn't go to the King for approval, it goes to the Crown, who is in this case the Prime Minister, who can say no. So yes, Kier could theoretically say 'go back and find a candidate who is a bit more Reigate Grammar School'.Tangled Metal wrote: ↑7 Feb 2025, 11:19pmActually there's a church body called the church nominations commission iirc that selects the candidate through 2/3rds vote for someone. This then goes to the King for approval and he has the ultimate decision. The PM is represented in the CNC by the PMs appointments secretary but he or she has a non voting role.
Just thought I'd let you know the correct procedure. It is explained better on some .gov website and other websites too if you're actually interested in finding this out for yourself.

Re: Public asked to name next Archbishop of Canterbury
Hypothetically the PM could ask the CNC for a second choice but in reality it has only been their role to submit the nominee's name to the King who is the person to decides on whether the nominee gets the role. Technically Cameron did not decide on Welby as per the comment. CNC decided on Welby with Cameron not opposing and the King appointing him. So at which point was Welby chosen by Cameron when at most he could only have opposed the nominee chosen by the CNC??sizbut wrote: ↑8 Feb 2025, 5:12pmWell, if you are going to be pedantic it what was a humorous thread, then at least get it right. Re: Public asked to name next Archbishop of Canterbury
Can I suggest his name should be "Archbishop of Canterbury"? That is his title so that should be his name too.
PS I said his deliberately since the CofE will not be topped out by the king then a female archbishop. Not this time at least.

I vote for a free vote on candidates - might throw up someone interesting!
Re: Public asked to name next Archbishop of Canterbury
Do they want "interesting"? I suspect not. Male, so as not to upset the more conservative side of the Church. Cautious and safe. In short, someone to continue to manage the decline in a quiet way.VinceLedge wrote: ↑9 Feb 2025, 3:20am I vote for a free vote on candidates - might throw up someone interesting!

Boris Johnson might look good in a frock plus he has the right credentials from his previous job

I might suggest the Greek goddess of togetherness and social cohesion: Araldite* or her Roman counterpart Bosticus

Maybe revive earlier names, and add II, III, etc, starting with the more difficult to pronounce Saxon ones.
Re: Public asked to name next Archbishop of Canterbury
That's certainly not how the last Archbishop was chosen.Tangled Metal wrote: ↑7 Feb 2025, 11:19pmActually there's a church body called the church nominations commission iirc that selects the candidate through 2/3rds vote for someone. Perhaps one might have some sympathy for whoever is bish-in-chief as he/she struggles with hugely complicated issues that threaten all of humanity, possibly the very existence of the Universe.
