Re: Moulton wicker basket.
RJB Can you detail the Trike description, It's distorting too much when I try and read it.

Re: Moulton wicker basket.
Sorry Barrowman I reposted this from a post on FB. The trike caption reads "Self Balancing ideal for Senior Citizens".

Yup, F-frame Moultons are expensive to restore because of all the chrome and unique parts, yet almost impossible to sell afterwards. You lose most of your money on any bike restoration but you lose just about all of it on a Moulton!pjclinch wrote: 7 Feb 2025, 9:56amI think typical "value for money" in terms of functional bang per buck doesn't really come into restoring vintage 60s bikes in quite the same way as, say, selecting a bag for a daily commute...Carlton green wrote: 7 Feb 2025, 9:11am You could commission someone to either repair or replicate the original basket but I can’t think that you’d get what I call value for money.

It will probably spend it's life in his garage with his period Sunbeam Alpine and his BSA C15. The alpine has a periodic day out but the C15 never comes out as he doesn't have a motorbike licence. The Moulton when finished will only get out on sunny days to the local community café.

I suppose that if you buy a new bike then, in normal times, you’ll take a massive hit (in percentage terms) when you come to sell it too. Perhaps the smart money is on buying excellent condition second hand goods rather than new. Of course with previously restored bikes the buyer might spend good money on something that’s well presented but actually in poor condition: to some extent it’s a gamble. Oh well, as with all gambles, use your best judgment and don’t risk more than you can afford to loose; and if you restore then do it for the utility that you’ll get out of the item and not as a way to increase value - wealth is better gained by doing wanted work for someone at a pre’ agreed rate.rogerzilla wrote: 10 Feb 2025, 8:18am. Putting costs in context - and this is separate from insurance, petrol, VED, and depreciation - my car has cost me over a grand in garage bills over the past year, my bikes likely haven’t even cost a hundred pound in parts - when actually ridden bikes are really good value

Don’t fret, it’s OK to: ride a simple old bike; ride slowly, walk, rest and admire the view; ride off-road; ride in your raincoat; ride by yourself; ride in the dark; and ride one hundred yards or one hundred miles. Your bike and your choices to suit you.

I commented in good faith on the fb post, but lack the enthusiasm to do so a second time...

Cheeky buggers. Anyone who has ridden an adult trike in anger will realise they are anything but
'self balancing'. It's to do with the 'triangle of forces' . On a bike you unconsciously lean into bend to offset this .
On a trike you have to 'lean out' to offset it ('triangle of forces ' in simple terms means the bike/Trike/car doesn't want to turn it wants to go straight on )!
Trading standards?

Re: Moulton wicker basket.
The book’s available on eBay for £33 inc delivery. That might seem a bit steep but ignorance also has a cost. With no dis-respect intended I’d have thought that anyone who can afford to get a Moulton restored and commission a new basket isn’t short of the price of the book, and over time the book’ll likely pay for itself in saving made from the knowledge gained.deeferdonk wrote: 10 Feb 2025, 1:50pmSorry - misunderstandings! Re: Moulton wicker basket.
FWIW 'D' profile baskets are used on some new bikes (eg. Pashley) and are available as spares. So I don't expect finding something slightly non-original that will fit/work OK will be too much of a challenge. However, I think all the ones I have seen have also been tapered, rather than parallel-sided, so if you are a stickler for detail, it is liable to get expensive.

Heres a taster of the restoration so far. Wheels still waiting to be rebuilt, pedals, saddle, baskets and racks need attention. Chainset and cranks ready to be refitted following rechroming. Looks immaculate already.
