Hi, not really a touring question I'm afraid. I am planning on staying in St Gaudens, just to the north of the Pyrenees, for a week and doing day rides from there. Principal reason for choosing this place is that it has a train station.
Does anyone have experience of St Gaudens? Is it a nice place to stay?
Thanks.

Re: Saint-Gaudens
I only passed fleetingly last autumn (on the V81 route) but it struck me as a fairly anonymous provincial French town. Not unpleasant but not a whole lot to detain you. Foix is a nicer town if you want somewhere nearby with a railway station.

You can use Google maps to look at the town in satellite view. You can also 'walk' the streets using street view.
Wiki has a short entry. Main feature is an 11th C church.
That's the best I can add
However if me I'd be searching for how I'm going to eat. If self catering maybe a decent supermarket, if eating out then restaurants, pizza places and kebab/chip shops. Most available via search on Google maps.

Re: Saint-Gaudens
It has been 10 years since I was last there, it is a nice enough town but little seems to go on there. Most places seemed to close at 6pm and there was very few places to get a reasonably priced meal. Once two of us arrived there to find the nearest campsite flooded and there was little accommodation other than the youth hostal. It turned out very good, individual rooms with own keys, en-suite shower, toilet. plus plenty of room to take bikes into the room. Downside was there were no kitchen facilities but it has a good low priced food in it's own restaurant
There is your way. There is my way. But there is no "the way".

If you want to stay in a town that has a station you could try Tarascon. Direct line to Toulouse and to La Tour de Carol on the Spanish border.
It's at the bottom of the Col de port. There are a number of circuits to take which include Pyreneen climbs.
There is a corniche road - an easy winding road to the Col de Chiola and if you are up to it the Port de Pailheres which I believe is highest in the Pyrenes.
You can get the train back to Tarascon from Ax.
Foix is a nice town on the same rail line but IMO a bit further away from the centre of things.

Many alternatives to Saint Gaudens among towns with or near a train station.
Nothing wrong with it, but without knowing more precisely what you're after, it is really hard to give you a piece of advice.
