Are the roads you mention open to all traffic?
Yes, all are public roads. Have been almost empty for 5+ months, then suddenly..........
A lot of motorcyclists don't ride during the winter months,so a bit of warm weather brings them out like spring flowers, that's probably the reason.

A few motorcyclists, but it's been the colossal increase in motor vehicles, virtually all 4/4 OAP's, which are very noticeable

On roads where a typical 3-4 vehicles (Couple of small vans, a 7.5 truck, a car) are the norm over 3-4 miles, suddenly conveys of 4/4 OAP's are apparent. Was a precise two weeks back, I realised they'd returned............didn't have the slightest issue cycling 30 miles down a main Scotland - England A Road, not a single vehicle failing to give sufficient space on passing, until turning onto the moor road

Within 0.5 mile on the moor "B" road, an absolutely dead straight road, clear sightlines, conveys of 4/4's, felt it necessary to cycle the remaining 3 miles in the centre of the carriageway, primary position, too many close passes. Happens every year, it's a migratory pattern of 4/4 OAP's .

The overturned 4/4's normally start appearing around Easter (Nb. Hope we have a few decent crashes this year, they tend to choose to crash at the crags, or near the lake. Christmas was decent last year, had 3 in just two weeks, bit's of two, still in place)

when the weather becomes nice people go for a drive in the countryside for a change of scenery, especially older folks.I took MrsR2,(who suffers from Parkinson's and Dementia and now can't walk very far) for a day out in the car to North Wales on Monday, from where we live close to J23 M6,a round trip of 200miles.I make no apologies for it.
I take your point about loonie drivers we saw two vehicle that had left the road embedded in the undergrowth, one a Range Rover,it's drive unhurt on the phone who gave me the thumbs up,the other a Ford Focus abandoned.

Tragedy of the commons, sadly.

The spring sunshine has certainly gone to the heads of the some joyriders around.... having seen some horrendous standards of driving and speeds around here....

The weather is still chilly and whilst sunny at times that warmth can quickly disappear, we’re on the cusp of change. The Snowdrops are near enough all gone and the Daff’s near enough all out in flower, the bird bath hasn’t had ice on it for a few days too so I reckon that Spring is here, and very welcome it is too. Clocks change at the end of the month.
Edit. And looking more closely at the trees and shrubs that I come across I notice that they’re ‘in bud’, so spring must be near enough here.

Don’t fret, it’s OK to: ride a simple old bike; ride slowly, walk, rest and admire the view; ride off-road; ride in your raincoat; ride by yourself; ride in the dark; and ride one hundred yards or one hundred miles. Your bike and your choices to suit you.

Highest hill locally, has had a near absolute coating of snow this week. And definitely cold. But had past 3 days on the bike.....

Birdsong has been non stop, lambs started appearing this week, first piglet in the field, beef calves out in the fields, daffodils heading into flower, hawthorns coming into leaf, trees starting to bud and...........both yesterday and today, have had miles on the back roads, conveys of vehicles, have found it necessary to actually start cycling in the middle of the lane, "primary position"

Found the several miles on the A1 dual carriageway yesterday and the 5 miles down a major A Road today, far quieter and easier with traffic, than many of the moor type back roads

Oh and first need for liberal covering with Factor 50 today.

It’s now official.

My indicator plum tree (River’s Early Prolific) has now spoken.

As I said before, typically if blooms c21st March, with earliest so far 16th March, and latest by a huge margin 20th April.
